Is it EVER a good idea to trade in a scooter for a larger one? What should I expect?

I believe Leo traded in his old 150 for Minnie. I would think as long as it's an honest dealer, you'll get a fair price. Not as much as selling it yourself, but then you also won't deal with making ads and answering tire-kickers and other time-wasters.
Never hurts to ask what they'll offer. You can always say no. Ford dealer offered me $100 for my wagon, probably 10 years ago. I'll grant, the a/c wasn't working at the time, but that shouldn't have killed the value that much. Meanwhile, State Farm offered me $3200 a few months ago to total him. So my car's increased in value? Right....
Here's an idea--check Craig's List for similar bikes to yours. See what folks are asking. See if any are disappearing from the list (meaning they probably sold), or if the same ones keep relisting. Good place to start for a value.

Is it EVER a good idea to trade in a scooter for a larger one? What should I expect? Back in May of this year I purchased a brand new 50cc Bintelli Scorch from Grand Rapids scooter. I paid an out the door price $1099.99 (jason gave me a deal because I was buying two scoots at the time)... It was a great scooter, ran perfect and got me hooked on Bintelli scooters. Only bad thing was it was a 50cc and just didn't have enough speed for these long country roads where I live... Grand Rapids Scooters does not stock 150cc's so I had to look around for a 150cc... First I wanted the 150cc Bintelli Scorch, but all the dealers had in stock were the 150cc Bintelli Havocs. I contacted a Bintelli dealer in Wisconsin, Adell Auto center through email and negotiated a deal to trade in my scorch for the Havoc. I was given $800.00 trade in value for a scoot that had 1000 miles on it. So, I only took a hit of $299.99 which I thought was a very fair trade in price.... Now, keep in mind, I was trading in a Bintelli, to a Bintelli dealer... I'm sure if I had a TaoTao, Tank, Jonway, Dongfang etc etc I wouldn't have gotten the same deal... Anyhow, thats what I suggest is to trade your scooter in to a dealer who sells the brand of scooter you have.
