Tach Help

I decided to put a tach on my scoot so I bought a nifty little unit from the bay. (mind you, I've never installed a tach on anything) I wired it up per the sellers instructions 2 positives and 2 negative to a 12vdc power source. The fifth wire to the signal, or coil if you will. Still I can't get it to work. If I put it on the negative pole on the coil I get nothing but lights, then if I stick it to the positive pole it acts more like a volt meter telling me how much juice the stator is putting out. Am I missing something here, or am I just not hooking it up right. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I dunno, Now I just think this thing is on crack. Took the scoot out for a spin and sometimes wile cruising or at idle it reads where it should be, other times wile cruising or accelerating, the needle is buried @ 13k. Then "sometimes" I can goos it when it's acting up and it will settle down and behave. Guess I'll put a better tach on my shopping list for next month. Recommendations welcomed.
Oh it's hooked to the lead on the coil.

We seem to have the same things going on with on scoots lately.... I recently purchased a Tachometer off of ebay. I think the wiring is similar to yours. Here's the instruction for hooking it up: Internal Night light, black wire(-) and red wire(+) long lines for LED light, DC 12V (These two wires go switched ignition to illuminate the gauge) Black Wire short line lock positive electrode (Positive Battery post) Green wire short line lock negative electrode (Negative Battery/frame ground) Yellow wire line contacts signal,and some models need to attach high voltage signal line I hope this thread gets updated (could you please add pictures showing where you connected to the pick-up?).... Only thing I'm unsure of is where to hook up the yellow wire.

Yup thats the exact one I got. The yellow wire is the one I'm having issues with. I saw a video on youtube where a guy was hooking the same unit up to his 250cc atv and he put it in the same spot that I put mine on and his was acting all wonky too.

xyshannen - I was looking for more information and I came across a webpage that I think will help both of us. The tachometer is a bit different style, but the hookup is the same. It explains how to hook up a tachometer to GY6 scooter. -------------------------------------------------- This is the procedure of how to install TYPE R or MOTO R analog tachometer on motorcycles, The photo shown, (disregard the blurred image) There are 5 wires comig out from this tachometer, namely 1.Green wire 2. Black wire 3. Yellow/black stripe wire 4. Red wire 5. Solid yellow wire The two wires that is being hold by black tube is for the tachometer backlight numbers 4 and 5. The other 3 wires left is for the input and the supply of the tacho itself, The GREEN wire (1) sometimes mistaken by others is used mainly by china as GROUND, this is also being used by some scooters made by them. (2) which is BLACK also mistaken as ground is actually the POSITIVE line of this tachometer. (3) is the input of the tachometer...This must be tapped on the primary side of the IGNITION COIL after the CDI output....and not from the secondary side to where your spark plug leads to....

Thanks Alleyoop! I'll do that (or feel free to) once I verify the installation of my tachometer. I'm not a scoot mechanic and I'm learning this as I go. But, I am computer technician and wiring schematics are almost like second nature for me... I made a wiring diagram for the hook up, if you (or anyone else) see's any errors, please correct me so I can get an updated schematic out. Also included is a schematic for a scooter (unsure of specific model) with a factory installed tachomter:

Thanks guys. That's where I'm hooking it too. I have it connected to the wire that hooks to the coil. When testing I found that of the 2 wires going to the coil one worked the other didn't. Even then, this tach was acting weird. However, playing with it last night for about 20 minutes I could not get it to act up at all and now seems to be working properly. Now that I've said that, it's probably going to go all fubar on me again. lol Cheap tach edit: You know the one thing I'm doing differently was I cheated and hooked both the light power and the tach power together and have them tapped into the power feed to my speedo light. I cheated because as I figure it 12 volts is 12 volts regardless of where it comes from and on my scoot running a wire to the engine compartment isn't an easy affair. I'm thinking that power source may not be exactly 12 volts because my lights do get brighter when I hit the throttle. So this inconsistent voltage to the lights isn't the best source of power for the tach and it needs to come straight from the battery.

Yes your correct, the lights are working off the STATOR and R/R that is why they get brighter with higher rpms. But what I would do is run a wire to the hot wire with KEY ON so it would only get power with the key on, OR you can put a OFF/ON toggle switch and run it straight from the battery, that way you can turn the power to the tach off when the scoot is off. Having power to it all the time it may drain your battery. Alleyoop

The circuit may need to be isolated and that could be why they have different hookups. I "think" the tachometer will be inert while the scooter is off and not draw any power. (I could be wrong though and the way you have it hooked up may be perfectly acceptable.) However if you have concerns about your battery being drained you could either run a SPST relay (which will come on with keyed ignition) or like Alleyoop suggested, you could run a toggle. I personally would not however splice the two positives and two negatives together because you might be causing feedback/interference on your tach circuit from the illumination circuit.

And something else I thought of.... Just for trouble-shooting purposes; You could just completely leave the illumination circuit unhooked. You do not need it hooked up for the tachometer to work.

No you don't but it sure does make it look purty. LOL
Yeah I plan on changing the power feed to see if it makes it work better. But I was just messing with it again and it still seems to be working okay now. Idunnno Still better make the change so I know for sure that's not causing any issues.

On my scooter, the easiest place to splice into for power when keyed on is my brake lights.
