Never heard of Walter Brennan, and too late to bother to Google him. So easy-peasy, Buddy Ebsen.
Main reason I liked Beverly Hillbillies, too.

Okay, so thanks to spandi I at least now know who WBrennan was.
And thanks to that intro but it does not one thing to change my mind. Buddy all the way.
(oh, and I did relate to Ellie May--loved the critters, and every now and then dressed up real purty-like)

I'm a real Buddy Ebsen fan, but aside from his "lovable old-geezer" roles, Walter Brennan really did shine in some super-macho, hard-core roles. He could play most any part convincingly, from frontier preacher, to merciless gun-slinger.
One "factoid" about Buddy Ebsen is the question of his actual age... When he passed on, he was supposedly 82 or so. But... There are ANCIENT silent movies he was in as a young adult, which would make him WAY over 100... Like 115 or something! He MAY have been one of THE longest-lived humans to ever exist.. Sweet!

BTW, you can check out Buddy as a guy with psychic powers on the Twilight Zone episode entitled "Primer Mover" www.hulu.com/watch/440891
