Maybe things are different for different insurances. State Farm, you don't have to file the claim. Or at least you don't if you have an accident. When I went down in the roundabout, the police came and made a report. I called my agent next day and asked about filing the claim. This second time would've made my rates go up, so I said I'd just live with the scrapes and they didn't file the claim. I'm guessing that extends to theft as well.
Btb, I have full coverage on my wagon, with $100 deductible. Am I crazy here?

Why would a state allow the scrapping of vehicles over a certain age without a title? Well, they really don't like you driving an "environmentally unfriendly" vehicle, even if it is in as new condition. I do consider that it allows theft of property with the permission of the state, and think that it is wrong, but I'm sure there are others who disagree, since it does allow for the disposal of abandoned vehicles that are left in old barns or on rental properties for years.

Might be a stupid question here, but why would anyone not report a stolen vehicle? As for not titling older cars, first off how do you license them and drive them legally then? Usually...bill of sale and previous owner's registration. Usually $2-300 for a junk car, a bit more for an old land barge or a truck.

Considering your Taurus is worth about $1000...yep. Wrong. He's actually worth I believe about $3000. Consider that State Farm paid $1800 to fix his front end (I misjudged the traffic ahead of me as slowing when they were actually stopping, and ran out of room. Her 2013 Mazda's back bumper had a scuff in the paint. I lost our front bumper and fascia, a headlight's bracket thingies that hold it level in place, and several engine things were shoved back. Apparently we hit just wrong for our side of it, sigh) And THAT's why I still have full coverage on my grand old '92 wagon. Good ol' Taury-car. Or you can just flatten and bury them. When we moved into our first house here, Mom said where they were building a new house a couple yards up, there was an old clunker rust bucket in the back yard. Then it suddenly was gone. Mom being Mom, she went up and asked where'd it go? They apparently flattened it then buried it in the back yard. Just imagine somebody's surprise some day when they go to install an in-ground pool, and discover a old flattened rustier-bucket already there. heh heh heh.... As for getting $200-some from the scrapyard, I suppose I can understand why risk going to jail. Esp if most folks decide not to report the theft. They just better never thieve MY old wagon, 'cause this is one 'Kat who WILL report it and WILL prosecute everyone involved and WILL ask for the death penalty. Hey, that's not being extreme--after all, they'll have murdered my car! >'Kat

bury 'em? sure, I know where several bodies got buried... when you grow up in the country and have trenchers and backhoe's and things available, it is the easiest least time consuming way to dispose of clunkers..

Well I concur, no title, no sale. it could very likely be stolen. But also many people bought scooters off the internet and either didn't get the MCO with it or didn't know what to do with the MCO and how to get it converted into a title. Or were just too lazy to do so. Others bought the scooters to joyride and didn't need a title as they never rode it on the highways. Also some people bought scooters to use for getting around large areas like the drag strip for example or large flea market areas, etc. Unfortunately if you do not have the MCO you cannot get the scooter registered and titled. Some states still allow unregistered 50cc or under size scooters on the roads and these scooters get stolen a lot because of it. Some people get 150's and pass them off as being 50cc scooters too.
