I have a gy6 150cc US Titan. It's a Tank or Roketta style scooter in my avatar picture. Recently I bought a new variator, rollers, and belt.
My old variator has the smaller ramp plate in the back, about 105mm just like the new one, and my Gates belt was riding about 3/16" away from the edge of the pulley sheave.
When I put the new variator on, I also put on the new cheapo belt. It was an 843 instead of an 835, as I'd read this might give a slight performance upgrade, and it rode very high on the pulley, all the way out to the edge.
I went for a ride and within minutes, at W.O.T., the belt shredded into little chunks and strings. I put my shorter Gates belt on it and it also rode very high on the pulley. Way too high to suit me, especially after that shred.
I measured the distance between the pulley halves and it looks to be about 18 1/2 - 19 mm wide at the top of the rear sheave. I thought maybe it had squeezed the 20 mm belt right out of the pulley. I put the old variator back on and ordered a 115 mm ramp sheave just to be on the safe side.
I do NOT have my kick starter shaft, or the gear that engages it, on the bike. The only gear in the case is the one behind the ramp sheave.
Are cheap belts known to just fly apart like that? Do you think the belt came off the pulley, or perhaps hit the case and was ground to a pulp? There was literally not one piece of the belt left intact. It was like yard mulch.

Cheap belt going 'splody for no apparent reason... it's been known to happen. Thanks. That's a good thread. It sounds like these belts are just junk. I think I, too, will stick with the good belts from now on. I still don't like the way the belts rode high on the variator though. I hope my new 115mm ramp sheave gets here soon. I'd like to see how it runs.

Well the 843 belt length did not help with the 107mm variator. The extra length probably the belt was slapping around hitting the top of the cvt cover casing and bottom as well and with the heat it generates the cheap belts will not take the heat. Alleyoop

I can't speak to the technical details of your belt size, but I had over 10,000 miles on my Gates belt and it looked perfect when I changed it. I put on a generic belt from scrappy and did not even get 1,000 miles out of it before it shredded to pieces. Pulverized is probably a better word. In Gates we trust.
