Hey, I'm new on here so I'm sorry if I'm not posting this in the right place. I bought a used 2013 taotao atm50 with almost 8000 miles on it about 3 weeks ago. It was driving a little rough, but started good and idled great. I noticed when I would be cruising at 30mph it would randomly seem to lose power and I would have to open the throttle more to get it going again. It never stalled out on me, just had a hard time accelerating at times. I pulled my spark plug and it was black so I adjusted the fuel/air screw to try and help lean it out. It seemed to run better (not perfect, but better) for about a week. Yesterday morning I got on it to leave and it wouldn't start. When I press the button it makes noise like it is trying to start but I hear nothing that would lead me to believe the engine was trying to start. I read some threads on here and checked a few things already. I do have a little gas going into my air filter but not a lot. No gas in the oil. Battery is fully charged. Petcock is functional. The guy who sold it to me said he had "reworked" the carb but he also told me its a 2012 and its not so I'm assuming whatever he told me isn't accurate. I'm going to buy a new carb and put it on but I want to make sure there isn't something else I should be getting. I wasn't able to kick start it yesterday but today after checking the petcock, I was able to kick start it twice and drove it around. It had trouble accelerating at 1/2 throttle but didn't stall, ran and idled okay. After it sat for a few hours, I can't get it to kick start again. Any help would be much appreciated. I'm not very experienced with scooters but I am mechanically inclined. Thanks in advance.

First thing to do is Adjust the valves, set them both to .003 inchs the exhaust may be tight and not sealing which will cause loss of compression. Alleyoop

Thanks for the response! I will check that tomorrow when its not raining. I'm really scratching my head over the kick start. I don't understand why I was able to kick start it earlier but not later? Am I on the right track with replacing the carb?

I have a new TaoTao scooter with 141km on it. It was sluggish at first and now it will start and run for 15 seconds and stop. I have read about adjusting the valves, but I need to know where to find out how to do this. Please help. Factory Rep is useless. No Response, Ignores Me..

Check for spark, take a spare or the plug out of the motor and hold it on the motor NOT THE FRAME and crank it if you have SPARK then it just may a fuel delivery problem. First make sure things are in good order no CRACKS in the air filter tubing going to the carb no cracks in the intake manifold, Vacuum lines no cracks etc.. In other words no AIR LEAKS, the only air getting to the motor should be from the air filter.
Now turn the fuel ratio screw clockwise until it stops and then turn it counter clockwise 2 - 2 1/2 turns. And try to start it if it starts you can then fine tune the mixture you want to get the HIGHEST idle out of the mixture. then if the rear wheel is spinning lower the idle using the IDLE SPEED screw on the throttle side that is the screw that has a spring under it. I put a brand new carb in it two days ago. New battery yesterday. Took the air hose off and sucked on it, got good flow from fuel line. Checked the bendix. It was a little dirty but not a lot. It is engaging with fly wheel and turning the belt. Belt is new also. I'm going to do the spark test and a compression test as well as replace all hoses just in case. Also ordered new kick start spring since mine is broken now. Will report back after spark test and compression test. Thanks for the tips! I need all the help I can get. Side note - I looked at the old carb (which was turning my spark plugs black within minutes of riding it) and I believe it had an main jet on it. Also, fuel that was coming from carb appeared to have moisture in it but fuel from tank doesn't. Hopefully the new carb fixed my fuel issues, won't know until I can get it started again.

I checked all my lines and they are all in good condition, no cracks, not loose. I did the spark test and sure enough.. I have no spark. I had already ordered a new CDI box and ignition coil but I read it could also be the stator? I'd like to test it but I'm not sure how.
Spark is needed to start the scooter whether I'm using the electric start or the kick start.. is that correct?
