Hey guys, so I was all but certain up until about a month ago that I was going to go ahead and buy a Powermax 150 for scooting around with my girlfriend taking in the beach air down in Cape May and Wildwood as well as some general errand running.
I'll be buying online, there are no dealers close enough to me to warrant the expense of having someone drive me out to them, plus their prices are pretty inflated and I don't mind doing the work myself. I actually look forward to it.
What I'm wondering is whether any of the knowledgeable scooter sages here can offer me any concrete pros and cons of each model, I know more than a few of you have one or the other. I've seen plenty of ride videos and tutorial videos on the EVO on YouTube and around the net, but the Powermax is hard to find anything of substance on beyond kids "stunting" around on them, and dealers trying to sell them.
I humbly thank you all in advance for any help you can offer me in making up my mind!
EDIT: Just wanted to add that we're both about the same height, around 5'7 - 5'8" and I'm a 210-215lbs guy. Not sure whether that will factor in, but more info never hurts, eh?

I have been driving a Evo ATM 150 since February. Been in shop one time due to stator failure. Been mostly reliable otherwise. In the Dallas area the price difference between the EVO 150 and Powermax 150 is $100. Really not sure what the difference really boils down to. I am 6'2" and on the heavy side. The EVO does just fine with me.

ng5y thanks for your input. I appreciate it! I've mostly read and heard that the EVO is a complex mess to work on compared to the Powermax, which I suppose is one of my primary concerns. But then I ask myself, how much MORE complex can a GY6 setup possibly get from one model to another?

Up until recently I had the Powermax(Sold it for a Honda Reflex)....Just like you, I narrowed it down to those two models. It came down to what you had to remove if you had to work on it. I found the Powermax was a simpler setup. Also, even though it has the same motor etc..., i found the Powermax had a little more pep.

Thanks whimsymaker. That seems to be the other main differentiating factor between the two, the weight to acceleration/top speed ratio. Considering I plan to do a lot of two-up riding, that is kind of a big thing for me as I don't want to worry too too much about losing my ability to maneuver safely with a passenger. How long did you have, or how many miles roughly did you put on, your Powermax before you made the jump up to a Reflex? Did it give you issues often?

Only one issue....I could not top off the tank completely. If I could see the float I was fine....If I overfilled, it would die at stops. Then the moment, I could see the float, it was fine. It was not vapor lock but with the float itself.
When you say two passengers, what will be the total weight?
About 800 miles before I sold it

When you say two passengers, what will be the total weight? Combined we come in a little under the listed 350lbs weight capacity. About 330-340.

I can tell you now, you will have trouble controlling the scooter at almost max weight. Tried it with my daughter and made it two miles before I said never again. And yeah we were about 15 lbs shy of the weight limit. Shame you cant get a 250cc....

I agree a 250 would be more ideal, and the larger frame of the Evo is what has me torn between the two 150s. It seems like the slightly longer frame with the wider body would aid in those problems. Ultimately my scoot, unless I really wind up loving the thing, is just a quick solution to transportation problems right now and in the future I would like to up to either a 250cc bike or a more suitable cruiser scoot in the same engine class.
Around here the roads are all pretty flat, not a ton of twisties either where I travel to and from, so I'm hoping we'll be able to get away with it for the remainder of the summer and in to the fall.

Maybe ng5y can chime in as to how the Evo handles with a passenger?

I am already at like 80% of total weight capacity, so with a passenger I am over the stated weight limit. It handles poorly then.... :-(

Ah well shucks, thanks for your help anyway ng5y, I really appreciate your input & help! You too Whimsymaker!
If anyone else has anything to add, please feel free. I'm still a good two weeks away from placing my order and biting the bullet one way or the other. I'm also welcome to suggested upgrades.

The most significant upgrade I made was the Dr. Pully Sliders. It lowered the RPM's by about 500 and raised the top speed by about 3 mph.
I wonder if they would be willing to ship the complete scooter to you with those already installed.

Hm, I'm not sure that they would but I also have no problem paying for any little upgrades that will make my scoot run better and longer. The higher the load, the lighter weight sliders you want to go with, correct?
I'm absolutely getting some nice tires on day 1 on the road since I don't trust that China rubber one bit, especially riding with a passenger. Hoses and the like as well.
Do the performance carbs really make that much of a difference over the stock ones from factory?
