When you use the remote to start it you have to shut it off using the remote, if it has an alarm you have also disable it using the remote usually hitting it twice will do it. When you start it with a remote it is programmed waiting to be shut off by the remote and it will not switch over to key start. Alleyoop

Just tried your suggestion and when I try to shut it off using the remote it seems it's trying to start while it's already running rather than shut itself off
EDIT: also the same time this started happening, the brake light stopped working. All of the running lights work but when I press the front brake, the brake light doesn't get brighter like it used to. Seems like an electrical issue.

Since you put on a new cable check around there you may have disconnected some wire they are usually the plug in type. But you should be able to shut it off with the remote. Do you have instructions for it? Alleyoop

No I don't have instructions for it. I got the scoot used off craigslist. It worked fine after changing the speedo cable and giving it about a 7 mile test run. Started up fine after I replaced the spark plug. Started up a couple times after that. Then when I went to go home, it revved a few times without turning over, then just completely stopped doing anything. I'm fairly positive that the remote I have is meant for starting only. Not turning it off. I just hit the kill switch to turn it off. Always have. Thing is I almost always use the key method. Didn't even realize that I had a remote start until I started playing around with it.

well then..omw home from my dad's everything completely shut off on me. Couldn't even turn my emergencies on. Didn't have any screw drivers on me to access the battery, so I had my dad come drive some out to me. As it turns out, the fuse that went to the battery was blown. Thankfully I had a spare right next to it in the casing.
Changing that one little fuse fixed the startup issue and the brake light issue. At least it was an easy fix! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!
