I have 2 Yamaha scooters, a Zuma 125 and a Vino 125. The owners manuals say to replace the belts every 12,000 miles. I have 26,000 miles on the Vino, and changed the first 2 belts at 10,000 miles. All seemed ok. Then 4,000 miles later, the third belt shredded at only 4,000 miles. There was rubber dust all over the inside of the belt compartment, and a ring of rubber around the outside of the edges of the front pulley. All three belts were Yamaha oem, and the variator is completely stock. It has been suggested that I need to replace the belts more often. The belts are about $50, plus the gasket, and a few O-rings that the manual says needs to be replaced every time the the cover is removed. I have only owned Yamaha and Honda scooters. What is the recommended belt replacement interval on other brands of scooters?

Aprilia/Piaggio is scheduled at every 12,500 miles. I would look for signs of misalignment, the sheeves sticking and not closing smoothly or grooving of the drive faces however the last belt you received may have been old stock that had been sitting in a warehouse too long and was already dry rotted when you installed it. Also the air filter on the CVT case needs to be kept clean or the belt will overheat and self destruct very quickly. The CVT filter is scheduled for cleaning every 6,250 mile and may need to be cleaned more often if you ride in dusty areas.

Do the Chinese scoots have that on the CVT? I don't recall ever seeing anything like that.

Yes, its usually an oval plastic insert on the front of the cover and many times held in place with a single screw going in from the side. The CVT filter may just have a mesh screen inside it or might have a coarse foam element. Or it can have this one: www.partsforscooters.com/165-26-CVT-Air-Filter-Assembly

Sure enough, looked tonight and it was there. Had the cover off several times but didn't pay attention to that. Guess I should check it out at some point and make sure mine isn't clogged.
