I say starting, but in reality she won't start. When it got cold about 2 weeks ago she decided she wouldn't start one morning. That afternoon after it warmed up she started so I just wrote it off as the carbs cold start circuit not working very well, and it was in the low 20's soooo....
But then the next day she wouldn't start and I ran the battery down trying. Tried jumping her, but to no avail. (Yes, car connected but off.) Then upon further diagnosis I find I'm getting no fire at the plug. Eventually (after getting mildly shocked holding the spark plug wire) I find that the wire has corroded in half at the plug end. I buy a new one and now I have spark at the spark plug. Yay! She runs for one day, gets me to work and strands me. Seemingly the same thing, cranks all day long kind of weakly, but won't start. In trying to figure this one out I have spark, run the battery down and try jumping again. She tries to start but only half a&&ed. In trying to find out why I hit the started cable and it breaks right off at the started. Again, corroded at the entry point on top of the starter. Dang it! I buy a new started while in the meantime having adjusted the valves, and buy a new battery for good measure. The new started arrives and I put it on and voila'! She fires up instantly. I'm happy. I turn her off, and restart her a couple of times and each time immediately, less that a half second she starts. So I proceed to put the body back on, tighten it all down, load up my tools to ride her home from work and jump on. It feels good when she fires right up as I straddle her to come home, and give her the gas. She takes off, feels strong, (maybe she was far past due for the valve adjustment) and gets about 20 feet and shuts off just as if I had hit the kill switch. Problem is, I didn't. No warning, no gurgle, no kind of slowly die, just engine shuts down and she's off. My headlights on, but she won't start back up....
I push her home. That was a long 2+ miles for a 52 year old guy to push a scooter. Anyway, I've got her home and can't find the problem and I hope someone can help. I put a new spark plug in her, it's gapped right and I have tried starting fluid to no avail, not even an almost start. I can see the arc at the spark plug, I'm getting gas....
Any ideas? She just died like the kill switch was shut off but hadn't been. She has a new coil/spark plug wire on her, a new spark plug, a new battery, the valves are gapped properly (as is the spark plug and I've tried the old and the new) and I'm stumped....
Any ideas? Thanks up front as any help would be appreciated. I'm tired of that two mile walk to and from work in this cold weather....
PS: I also noticed that on my CDI I have a red light (It's one of those blue, supposed "hotter" unrestricted CDI's) and I could have sworn that before this all started that when I turned the key on prior to starting her that that red light came on and stayed constantly illuminated. Now it doesn't, it isn't lit constantly, but kind of pulses on and off as I try to start her. Can anyone confirm or deny that is should stay constantly illuminated once your key is turned on, but before the engine is cranked and started?
