I just see it as if you can afford a $2,000 scooter than you can afford a $200 trunk. I suppose I fell into that trap. I spent probably $500 for a Givi trunk and custom rack specifically for my scooter. I did want it to look nice. But in my defense, the scooter is a hobby I like to spend some money on, I wanted it to look nice, I might take some overnight tours that a milk crate is not really built for, and if I ever upgrade the ride, the Givi stays with me. It is a nice top case.

Err...I would bet that 30lbs of groceries is WAY, WAY more than that rack is rated for! No duh! Manufacturers underrate everything. I had a reputation of making things work that they cannot. My rule is that if anything breaks it needed replacing. My Vespa has a GVWR of 670 pounds -- which is the bike, me, and 220 pounds of stuff. And that is without overloading. I cannot find a GCWR, but I figure I should be able to connect a 200 pound trailer on to the rack.

I think you are right, at least with the better scoots. (Unfortunately, the rack on my old Chinese 150 wasn't even up to the "11 pounds" it was "rated" for... LOL!). It broke 3 times, was welded up again and finally "fixed" by wrapping the broken pieces together with zip-ties. THOSE worked!
My "new" old Kymco has a monster-sized forged-aluminum rack with built-in back-rest, bolted to the frame, with lift-handles for the passenger, and to place the scoot on the center-stand. That rack looks, and feels like you could hang the scooter from it... BUT... As factories WILL do, it's plainly marked (letters forged into the piece, no less) "MAX LOAD: 10 KG." Cheesh... Talk about a conservative rating! I'll guaranty that when a stout passenger leans on the backrest, it puts AT LEAST 300 pounds of torque on the thing! Not to mention that placing the scoot on the center stand, lifting by the handle on one side must put a 100 pound "reverse" strain on it!
I replaced the very small original trunk with a new, LARGE one though, and it looks to me like a heavy load in the trunk, combined with the fact that the mount extends considerably more rearward than the rack, may induce abnormal fatigue as it imparts a "flopping" up/down motion to the rack on bumps.
With that in mind, I believe I'll fab up a pair of struts from the rear of the trunk-mount to the scooter, to "triangulate" the setup and eliminate any up/down flopping of the assembly... Enough twisting can stress any metal, and I do NOT want to break, and replace the factory rack on THIS one... They are EXPENSIVE!
Ride safe,
Leo

Near the beach in San Diego you see a lot of China Scoots with surfboard mounts. Very cool.

I put a 30 pack on the floor with a strap, Two bags of groceries under the seat, and 3 more in the helmet trunk on the back. The store is only a block away, it all works out :-)
