I see it all the time and it looks ridiculous....
Your opinion doesn't mean squat. I have a $4,599 MSRP Vespa. I have a $25 Rubbermaid 8 gallon Actionpack box.
I did not buy for a scooter for fun. I bought the scooter for transportation. I got the Vespa because I expect it to last at least 10 years / 80,000 miles. My Scooter is a shopping cart. I can stash 30 pounds of groceries in the lockable tail box, more under the seat, and I now have a front rack so I can carry case of 24 bottles of beer foreward.

OK, Now, I've gotta admit Paladin convinced me...
That Rubbermaid box looks nearly IDENTICAL to an expensive trunk I almost bought for my scoot... Now in all honesty, it really DOES look light-years better than a milk crate... LOL! But yeah, somebody copied the Rubbermaid box, and called it a fashion-statement (that holds a LOT of stuff in the process)... In fact, my Wife's doc has a new Vespa like Paladin's with a VERY expensive large trunk... WHICH LOOKS JUST LIKE PALADIN'S RUBBERMAID BOX!
Slap on a band of chrome trim, outlining strip LED stop-light and turn-signals and you've made yer' nasty self an even SAFER fashion-statement. I can't help but think carbon-fiber milk-crates are in our near future! Add lights, and a fitted waterproof cover, and I'd use one on a $30K Harley... I think... Maybe? Well, maybe if it had a chrome skull on it...
All kidding aside, I truly have noticed that often, the better a trunk looks, the less it holds! And like Paladin, I like to be able to haul a load!
Ride safe, ride LOADED... (with cargo)

You shouldn't be proud of being able to haul 24 bottles of beer.

I see it all the time and it looks ridiculous. People buy an expensive scooter like a Honda Ruckus or Yamaha Zuma only to do the hillbilly thing and mount a milk crate on the rack instead of a nice trunk. I can see a cheap $700 chicom scooter but a $2,200+ scooter. Rukus:Zuma:Given the similarities in their 'rugged, industrial-minimalist' design/image, I'm going to go out on a limb and speculate that it's mere 'hipster imaging' that causes people to put a 're-purposed' milk crate on their scoot. Kinda like hipsters that will spend money on 'fashion' glasses with plain glass (read: non-corrective) lenses...just so they can 'look' intellectually superior.

Nope, just pokin' the bear... and I don't use a milk crate..Usually my choice is a magnetic tank bag. I have put metal tabs on the hump to clamp to. And occasionally, a backpack with the straps modified to fit the passenger area of the seat. Looks better, in my opinion, than most low priced top boxes..

OK!
Start a new scooter fashion trend.
Just paint the milk crate to match the scooter!

A small toolbox is mucho better looking than a milk crate which is hillbilly looking.

I will continue to use public transportation for groceries and for appointments when the weather is bad. On nice days I will use my moped to go places.

A mix of public transportation and scooter is a really good and economical way to get around. Sadly, the bus system in Vegas usually only gets me within an hour and a mile of where I work. Not their fault. I work in a localized industrial area and while I can see my workplace from the bus stop, I have to walk around several walled in areas to get there and the timetable puts me there early or late. Still good to have. Great to have a scooter for grocery and laundry runs. (And fun runs of course)
