Hi,
I'm having a strange problem with the speedometer. For a while the needle was wobbling at lower speed, so i took out the speedo cable (the inner cable), and i cleaned it with brake cleanning fluid, and then i lubricated it with grease. That didn't solve the problem. I also checked the speedometer gear at the front wheel and it's spinning ok.
A few days ago, the speedometer needle started to jump all over the place. When i'm maybe at 50 Km/h it's showing 100. It even went all over to the end of the scale. The needle also sometimes get stuck at certain speed when the scooter is stopped. Sometimes the needle is showing the correct speed (although it wobble).
With all that the odometer is working without a problem. I guess there is a problem inside the speedometer itself, is it possible to fix it? (a new speedometer is over 100$) What can get wrong inside?
Many Thanks.

The speedometer and odometer are singly housed but two separate components. There are no user-serviceable parts in the speedometer. In the old board I had some great photos of the internal workings of the speedo. Basically it uses magnets to push the needle against a spring. The more the magnets spin the more force against the spring, the higher the speed. Something inside the speedo is bad/bent/worn. The speedo is fairly simple to take apart if you want to dare to look at it, but if you don't know what you're looking at you may make it worse. A new gauge cluster is about $45 and some used may be floating around for free to $25.

Hi,
Thank you for the reply. I have a SYM scooter, and their speedometer for this scooter is a bit pricey.
I actually took it apart yesterday, and i also took some pictures which i'll upload later. I also made a video with the speedometer connected to the scooter, and i turned the wheel by hand. you can see as the speedometer is slowing down it is getting a little stuck. I don't know if it supposed to be like that or not.
Thank you.

Great video!
Can you turn the needle by hand? Does it rotate smoothly? Does it feel *loose*? If it does and it doesn't hang up, the issue probably is within the rotating assembly. If its a bit loose it needs to be tightened a bit.
Between the outer circular case and the inner one that attaches to the speedo needle/shaft are some magnets, one on the top disc and one on the bottom disc. One or both may have come loose. If you can carefully disassemble the assembly, you may be able to repair it.

Hi, Yes, i can turn the needle by hand and it's very smoothly. the needle also return back to zero smoothly. I don't know if you can see it in the video, but the outer circular case is spinning not round. I tried to apply some white grease on the gears (after cleanning the old grease), but it didn't help much. I can try and disassemble the assembly to get to the magnets, but i don't know how. Do i need to take off the needle (isn't it going to cause the tension spring to go out of calibration?), or do i need to disassemble it from bottom where the speedo cable connects to? Here are some pictures: Thank you.
