After reading about another forum member's scamping trip, I've been itching to try scamping out for myself! I manage a restaurant and deli, and Thanksgiving + Channukah will be taking it's toll on me this weekend, so I'm going to take a short test trip next week from my house in Vegas to the Valley of Fire State Park about 75 miles away. The normal route involves an interstate, so I'll have to take the back way along Lake Mead's Northshore Road. I figure on averaging 35-40mph most of the way, so I imagine the trip should take about 2 1/2 hours one way. Here's the battle plan:
Gear: -- Standard cold weather riding gear (highs in mid 60's so not too worried) -- Tarp to create a tent out of, good sleeping bag, and air mattress -- Emergency medical kit -- Extra gallon of gasoline, quart of oil, emergency tools, spare belt, plug, etc -- Sandwiches for lunch, beef stew for dinner, and instant oatmeal and coffee for breakfast -- Android phone with GPS, pre-loaded Google maps, and camera
I figure all my gear together shouldn't weight more than 50lbs
Route: Depart Lake Mead and Buffalo, heading East on Lake Mead Blvd Continue on Lake Mead Blvd to Northshore Road North on Northshore Road along Lake Mead Recreation Area West on Valley of Fire Hwy to Arrive Valley of Fire State Park (return trip will be same route in reverse)
I'm excited about trying out scamping! Will post pics and maybe vids once I'm back!

That is very pretty country you are going into, beautiful red rock country with lots of petroglyphs. We drove through there in our motor home in early Oct. after they closed all of the national parks. All of the tour companies were scrambling for places to take their customers, many of them from foreign countries who got screwed by our government. That will hurt our visitor business for a long time. There were a couple of young ladies from Switzerland who camped next to us and they explained how that would effect us for the long haul. One was a travel agent. Sorry, I digressed. There are some nice camp grounds there. I didn't unload my Reflex that trip. Too crowded. Enjoy your outing!

Had to postpone due to weather. Winds with gusts near 50mph, too much for a safe ride on an open highway along the side of Lake Mead (wind gusts on the lake are always higher).

Sorry to hear it got delayed. I remember the area well. I was stationed at Nellis (75-78) and did the Lake Meade thing, Valley thing, Dam thing, Red Rock, Mt Charleston, and had a great assignment there. My ex now lives there, so, may never get to see Vegas again
Good luck on Plan B

Yeah, mother nature wasn't with me on this one, but I'm not giving up, just postponing!
If you were here in the late 70's, you would seriously freak out if you saw Lake Mead today! The water level is down so far you can't even fathom it (pun intended). The original boat docks have all been moved out by over 100 yards, and the water rings on the valley faces are 100s of feet high. If anyone doesn't think there is a water crisis in the southwest, all they have to do is look at Lake Mead! Google image search Lake Mead and you'll see what I mean!
