I've been thinking long and hard about my Reflex project. The frame has a VIN but I don't have a title. The South Carolina DMV has categories for Salvage-Rebuilt and Homemade. The DMV will assign a VIN to a frame without one. Seems like there is a loophole here. Remove the VIN and customized the frame enough to be unrecognizable as a Honda. How to custom bike shops that make their own frames do it?
I'd like to get a Salvage-Rebuildable title, but I have no idea what insurance company has it.

In SC I know you can apply for a lost title . I an guessing you bought it with out a title ? Did you get a bill of sale and transfer of tittle paper from the DMV . When you got to register say " I want to register my MOTORCYCLE " not scooter . Their website says the register mopeds , I went to register my 150cc scooter and the ( censored ) said " We do not register mopeds " I then used the phrase I stated above and noted it was a 150cc and then registered it . I also registered my 50cc as a " motorcycle " since I have it insured , hated getting " DUI blah blah hate from cagers " and stock it went faster than the moped speed limit .
Custom build bikes have a VIN on the frame and they install the engine and body . A tube frame for a rail buggy also has a VIN . You will have to pay property tax on it too . Register is 10 and tag is 15 , unsure on what your property tax would be but mine went from 28 to 51 this year for a 150 . I live in SC too .

Yea, I am trying to get a title and hoping to get the bill of sale soon. I also noticed that the SC DMW website says they'll assign a VIN for home-builts. My other option is to buy a titled frame here in SC. It says I can't buy a "Salvage-Rebuildable" out of state unless I build it in that state first, title it there, then transfer it to SC.

If you can do that is SC, you are lucky. In NJ it's a lot more strict. they usually decline non title request.. Otherwise you can use a titling company, the charge anywhere from $200 through $500 (mainly for a motorcycle) for a title but they handle everything for you.

Found another tidbit on the DMV website. If the vehicle is 25 years or older, and the title is not available, a title request can be made. I'll be on the lookout for old Honda Helix frames. SC Application for a special serial number

Will SC allow you to get a bonded title? In TX, the title on my 1965 Honda S90 was lost and the last title holder could not be determined. I was able to get a title by posting a surety bond. Cost me around $120 total. Give it a try.

In AZ you could get a bonded title just by having the MVD verify the VIN on the frame. You have to keep the bonded title for 3 years, then it will be changed to a regular title. There is a local chopper/bobber builder around here who builds his own frames. He buys titled frames, and welds the steering head (where the VIN is) to his new frame, then it can be registered as whatever the VIN says it is.
I heard that it is really easy to get a title in Vermont, which can then be switched to another state. Not sure if that is true or not.
