[replyingto=bigggroovy]bigggroovy[/replyingto]As far as I know, % of people who ride motorcycles and scooters to not take it seriously. % do not ride for cheap transportation. % for recreation, for fun, not for serious transportation, not for work. The young lady was on a rental scooter, riding it because it was cheap transportation. She was taking it serious.

Question--does the rental place provide helmets and gear?
I can see me travelling and finding a scooter rental place, and wanting to scoot around rather than taxi or big-bucks car rental. But I wouldn't have my helmet or gear with me, of course.

Over July 4th, we rented scooters while at St. Simon's Island. 50cc, so no MC license required. They did supply helmets, but we brought ours since we knew ahead of time. Light, small, cheap and perfect since the speed limit didn't get above 35 at all!
I always ride ATG ATT, except this one day. On vacation, slow speeds, decided I didn't want to, but everyone at least wore close toed shoes, not flip flops.

Yeah, I'd at least have tennies on, even on vacation and renting. And if I packed them, pants and a jacket.
But I'd be uncomfortable without my armoured jacket and pants. And gloves! (and may I always feel uncomfortable without my gear)

I don't ride that way around Atlanta, whether I'm on my motorcycle or my wife's scooter!

NONE WERE WEARING HELMENTS!!!!!!! And??? If they are adults then have the right to comfortable and risk injury. I don't wear a helmet in a Free State, other than that day in NM riding through hail.

Can't really say for 'groovy, but how I read his post I wonder if the renters comprehend those scooters they're renting have the potential to hurt or kill them. Or if they think scooters are rather like bicycles than motorcycles. And if they fall over they'll just get some scrapes. Yes, they're adults. But also yes, they need to be informed before making the choice to not wear helmets. Because if they're riding without helmets because they don't know and helmets aren't offered or the risks explained, then they really aren't making a choice at all. Are they. I always wear my helmet. Even when I first got my scoot (when Mom took that photo of me in the scroll) and could only drive the private streets of our neighbourhood going no more than 20mph, I wore my helmet. And I live in a "free" state. And I've never felt uncomfortable in it. Yes, I'll flip open the visor at a long stoplight, but that's it. I'd rather have mussed hair than the mussed jaw I'd have now if I had chosen to not wear protection. >'Kat

If not adults then their parents paid for the rental and they want their kids killed. Probably for good reason.
I am sure that 50% of all people will call all motorcyclist idiots and all should be taken off the road. I do not willing to have them say I cannot ride. I cannot tell those teens should not ride.

Back in 1964, a riding pal and I were straddling our Harley choppers, sort of waddling, "walking" them along, engines not even running. We were chatting with some girls on bicycles doing the same, along the cement "beach" at Lake Michigan. My pal put his foot wrong, lost his balance and toppled over head-first, the hog falling on his upper body. The girls were falling-down laughing.... until I got the bike off him. He was DEAD.His head hit the cement, the Harley hit his head simultaneously, and at 17, he was gone. 2 mph, engine not running, and he was killed as thoroughly as if he hit a bridge at . I've worn a helmet ever since. Just me...Now that I'm old, and my bones break easier, I'm pretty careful. And I notice some MEGA-STUPID riding. And I mean as STUPID as picking up a running chainsaw by the blade... A few weeks back, I'm waiting at a red-light in my car. Here comes a young lady on an Italian-style scoot, from my right. She's in shorts, tube-top, no helmet... riding about 45 mph, no-hands while TEXTING. I have no idea how the throttle stayed open, hands-off. The light turned green for me, I just sat still while she sailed right through a full red-light, happily texting away, oblivious to the honking horns and screeching tires of the fast traffic entering the intersection. One hapless driver did a complete donut trying to miss her, nearly hitting other traffic head-on. THAT is the stuff that will get yourself, and others killed. Years ago at a shooting range, a lady with very small hands was trying out her boyfriend's .45 and her small hand didn't quite depress the grip-safety enough. She turned to me, stuck the 1911 in my face and frantically started pulling the trigger, asking me why the gun wouldn't fire. I never "ate dirt" so fast! As I ducked, it fired. My ears still ring... Wonder if she's the same gal on the scooter...? Nah... probably her Mom... LOL!Now I'm definitely NOT ragging on the gals here. These two "experiences" just happened with females. Every week or so, I see MEN every bit as dumb... or dumber... or dumberer...The REALLY scary part of these observations is that these folks VOTE. When operating ANYTHING that can kill you (or me...) PLEASE handle it accordingly...Leo (ears still ringing after 20 years) in Texas

When operating ANYTHING that can kill you (or me...) PLEASE handle it accordingly... Amen, Leo. Amen. Goes for scooters, guns, cars, push mowers, weed whackers--not just kill, but anything that can injure you or me. Please be careful and thoughtful folks. >'Kat
