Sadly, they also attract police attention too.

I put in a Stebel air horn and the first night I was out, a guy in a pickup decides to go from the far left lane to the center (where guess who was?) without looking beforehand. Laid on it, and the driver practically ended up stuck to the roof of his cab and wondering where the "truck" went to.

If every car and motorcycle had loud pipes, there we'd all be deaf! If not deaf,we'd all go into a trance from the constant humming of a thousand bee sounds on the road.

I believe loud pipes do help sometimes (o)

In that case, you could install a horn as a pipe. It'll amplify the sound, to deafening levels.

Hate to be the voice of dissent here, but the MSF coaches (at least all I've taken classes from) disagree. And I have to agree with the coaches based on my personal experiences.
When I'm in my car and the loud pipes are behind me still, I don't really hear them that much. They're part of the general traffic noise. Once they pull alongside and esp after they pass, THEN I hear how loud they are.
So if I don't look before changing lanes right in front of you, I probably didn't really hear your loud Harley pipes. 'Cause think about it, that sound is going out behind you.
I mean, sure, if you want louder pipes then get them. They DO help make you more noticeable. Same as bright coloured gear rather than black. But don't depend on loud pipes alone (or bright colours) to keep you safe from inattentive drivers. Your best preventer of accidents is that squishy ball your helmet protects ;D .

I hear medium to loud exhaust behind me in traffic just fine... Pipes don't have to be deafeningly/annoyingly loud to me heard. The cans with the silencers in them make plenty of sound without being too much. I would be scared to death to drive a whisper quiet scoot or sport touring bike... ANY extra chance that will let someone know you are in their blind spot is worth having. There's not much you can do (besides lay on the horn) in that 1/2 second it takes for some people to swoop quickly into the lane next to them (you know how some cagers do it...) if you don't have a way out. Of course a safety goal is to not allow yourself to get boxed in by cars and curbs, but sometimes it's unavoidable.

why does someone edit post on here? Uh, usually 'cause I find a whopping typo that makes me look like a total idiot instead of my more usual semi-idiot. ;D Or else I post, but someone else has posted the exact same thing meantime. So I edit it to something like "I agree". I suppose you also edit your post if you realise after posting that it comes off as nasty or flaming, when you didn't mean it to. So you edit and make it nicer. >'Kat
