Hello all,
I went over today to change the oil on my nieces 50cc BMS federal. She tells me that in the last week she's had to kick start it.
I tried the electric start just a click. I jumped the solenoid with a wrench and it pops right up and starts. So that means the starter is good and the battery is good. Does it need a new solenoid or a new starter switch? If you press the starter switch real fast repeatedly it starts up about once out of 25 times... the other times just the click.
Please let me know what I need to buy. Thanks much!

Sounds like a solenoid to me.

You can use a test light at the trigger wire on the solenoid to find out

There is a wire that runs from the starter to the solenoid it needs to trigger the solenoid with a 12 volt signal. Hook up a test light to the 2 wires that are plugged into the solenoid it should light up when you push the button. You can also use a meter to check for voltage the same way...

No if it lights up it means the switch is telling the solenoid to close but the solenoid is refusing.
Also the wrong way to check it and it might temporarily fix is is to just give the solenoid a good wack with the plastic side if a good hefty screwdriver sometimes this will unstick it. Assuming it's sticking...

[replyingto=jimboeau]jimboeau[/replyingto]Well put in a new solenoid relay tonight and it starts perfectly! I new it had to be the solenoid because when I hit the old one it worked for a few starts and then wouldn't again. Anyway it was about a 5 minute job.
