I put in an orange ( high output) coil and it was running fine. I shut it down to add some gear oil & suddenly, no more spark not even with the original coil. Anybody have a similar experience? I'm thinking the cdi is burnt. It was originally restricted by a speed sensor on the clutch bell, but I dsconnected that about 500 miles ago and it didnt seem to be rev limited so I used it with no problem until the upgrade. It was firing just fine, and now nothing

I'm thinking the cdi is burnt. It was originally restricted by a speed sensor on the clutch bell, but I dsconnected that about 500 miles ago and it didnt seem to be rev limited so I used it with no problem until the upgrade. It was firing just fine, and now nothing When these upgraded CDI's work, they are GREAT... But sometimes, they seem to have a habit of going bad. They are still probably more reliable than the black factory ones, AND provide much better all-around performance. My technical knowledge of them is nil, but I know SOME of the coils must be grounded by the mounting screw, while others are not. If a grounded-style coil is run without a solid ground, it can harm the CDI. I'm sure Alleyoop, or one of the other savvy guys can tell you how to determine if your coil must be grounded through the mounting screw, or if it's grounded by a wire. I also found out the hard way that these CDI's will absolutely NOT tolerate water... My "red" one worked fine for nearly 5 years, until I got it wet while washing the scoot, and it "died" immediately upon attempting to start the engine... Long push home!I currently have a "blue" replacement which is running fine, but other riders report the "blue" ones as being less reliable than the "red" or "orange" CDI's. That may or may not be the case. Guess I'll find out... LOL! My original factory CDI went bad the first month... It actually gave some warning with poor idle and missing under acceleration, which went away upon replacement. The aftermarket CDI's however seem to just "die" like your experience. While your problem could be something else (coil, "kill-switch" engaged, side-stand, or brake-lever "safety" ignition interlock malfunction, etc.) the CDI is the most likely culprit. Like some people, sometimes they just "go bad"...I believe I'm going to get a spare CDI myself to keep on-hand. My concern with that however, is if I keep it on the scooter where it's available, over time will it go bad from weather, time, etc. even though not being used? No perfect answer, but parts like CDI's go bad even on expensive high-end scoots... Yup! They do! Hope this may help,Leo in Texas

I would double check the grounds all of them . I like to replace the thin factory wire on the grounds circuits .

I don't see what could be burning out your cdi's , I would check the connections at the cdi plug also see if they seat correctly too . take apart the frame common point for the frame grounds clean them off put them back together .
