I've been posting from my phone the last couple of days. I've got a bad habit of leaving my laptop on my bed, then falling asleep and waking to it on the floor upside down-- prob has something to do with it. I did that 3-4 times that last week or so.
I noticed a few days ago, after powering it on, the screen looked VERY glitchy(not even legible at all). It worked after starting it back up.
It powers on, but the screen is black-- almost like it's in sleep mode but won't wake up.
I'll take it apart. Maybe I'll see something. Just don't have a lot of extra money on hand to get a new one. I think the hard drive is OK... hopefully.

Check youtube for videos (I watched a young kid take a laptop completely apart and swap out the keyboard and backlight.)
Here's one from a guy who obviously does it for a living.
(When you go to youtube just type in your particular make and model.)
P.S. check ebay for parts.
Also check if you'll need any special screwdrivers (tri-wing etc.) also on ebay.

Spandi- I've taken it apart a few time, no special tools needed.
A tad worried about the CPU. I did put new thermal compound on the CPU a few weeks ago, but it's worked as expected.
It's 5 years old (approx).

If the hard drive is fine, thats what matters most to me, I can at the very least transfer all the data to a new pc/laptop. Leaning towards a pc now.

If you got the CPU hot it may be cooked even though it can still work . I had a clients laptop that the vents were clogged with dust and dog hair . I cleaned it out and used some Artic Silver . It did help it but it was still not right . I bought an OEM chip and replaced it for 60 and it was almost new again . Leaving a laptop for a long duration will make it get hot and shorten its life . Use the power saving options so after so long it goes to sleep . Amazon has boocoos on cooling trays which is a vented tray with 2 or more fans powered by a USB port . I also use an aluminum stand that is vented on my workbench . Dell XPS and iBooks are like a heater and not really what I would want on my lap unless I was in Alaska . My netbook barely gets warm but with the 1.6 MHZ Atom CPU it is wimpy compared to a multicore modern one

I've left that thing on all night--- i can't even count how many times. It only has 2g of RAM, and a 150cc hard drive lol. Not too bad for approx 5 years old and beat up. Only paid about 500-600 for it.
The beauty of a smart phone.
I've had a few cooling fans since the last 4 and three-fourths years.
The CPU has been almost halfway cooked for a year. I had to power the max performance of the CPU(s) to get it not to power off.

Sounds like it's time for something new.

My suggestion is get an end table, trunk, something to put at the foot of your bed. Keep your laptop on that. Then when you fall asleep it's still relatively safe.

Sounds like a display problem, did you try hooking up an external display? Then you'd be sure if it was really the CPU/system was fried.

Does it have a HDMI or monitor port? If so try hooking it up to your tv or a monitor to see if you get a picture. If so it may just be a loose wire going to the screen. If so open it up enough to get to the wire going to the screen and give it a little wiggle. See if the screen lights up then.
