I have grown to despise the headlight on the handlebar assembly. Id love to remove all the plastic on mine to expose the bars and replace some gauges but seems like a lot of work. Lights on the front panel is so much better looking.

Ya know, I've thought about that very same thing. The only plus side of the light on the bars, is that it turns with you and illuminates where you're going,while the light on the cowl stays with the direction of the bike. I gotta agree though, they're butt-ugly ;D but the scooter looks nice  |

[replyingto=domindart]domindart[/replyingto]Dude you need to slop on the silicone protectant with a small brush,,I use the cheap stuff from dollar store,,slop it on heavy and all your plastic and rubber will stay nice for a long time,,for the gauges and clear stuff like head light covers I use Simoniz system 5 befroe anything else,,us it on everything,paint,rubber,plastic,then slop the silicone on thick with a brush and wipe excess off with a towel. Ill take a picture of my gauge cluster in 5 years and show you how good it works  |

Hmmm... I was just looking at your photo, and doggone, I actually LIKE the look of the headlight. I also like the bar-mounted headlight because it follows the path of the front wheel. I'm an old biker, and my scoot is the first 2-wheeler I've had with the lights in the cowl. They do look good, but honestly, no better than the bar-mounted lights.
You probably COULD remove the plastics from the bars, and clean up the area, and mount gauges, although it WOULD be some work. Once done, you could find some smallish lights in their own bezels, and mount them to the cowl. Painted to match, they'd look fine.
I dunno... your scoot is one of the better-looking ones in my opinion. But to each his own. There ARE numerous headlights available to customize with, if you do remove the handlebar trim.

See, now I'm on the other side from Leo. I don't care for the look of the top-mounted light. And maybe it's 'cause I just recently started driving two wheels, and yes I understand it can be safer, but I didn't want a light that moved whenever I moved the handles. My car doesn't do that, just was...I dunno...it bothered me some.

THAT'S what make this hobby fun! Everybody likes something different... That's why they make step-throughs, baby crotch-rockets, trikes and even new, resurrected Vespa and Mustang replicas. I understand your liking the fixed-headlights. They took some getting used to for me, but fixed, or bar-mounted both work fine. If I had a choice, I do believe I'd have BOTH... On the scooter, the lights are almost in front of the wheel, so the light stays where the bike is, not neccesarily where the wheel is turned, so ugly as they may be, they are probably more functional than the cowl mounted ones.Mine are on the cowl too,a nd even though you turn the wheel,the light stays where you were, not where you're going ???Leo's got the right idea, both are probably the best way |

I'm actually FOR the headlights on the handlebars, due to illuminating where I'm going.
On every cruiser motorcycle the headlights are mounted on the fork.
Though I got to agree, most scooters headlights don't look very nice.

Having both styles parked in my garage, I strongly prefer the low & fixed mounted position of the headlight on my Derbi to the handlebar mounted Tao Tao for a few reasons. The lower mounting (with a properly adjusted headlight angle) provides a more consistent and longer beam than the higher mounted one. Then again, I guess the Tao Tao isn't built to do more than 35-40 mph so it wasn't designed to illuminate that far down the road. Also, as for the light following your path, I kinda disagree. At very low speeds, sure, but above 20-25 mph counter-steering takes over and it will actually point the headlight slightly AWAY from the inside of a curve.  |

Yeah, I have to agree with that because you lean into curves. However, If you are driving slowly down a trail at night. The bar mounted is better.( not that i ride down dark trails all th time) but i have once or twice ;D

I have had both. I don't know that I actually care either way. It is kinda nice to be able to point the light without moving the bike occasionally but it's normally not really an issue with either type. One of the reasons I got the Vespa was the way it looked with the headlight on the bars... I like em on the fender too though...
