I am new to the board (obviously) and new to scooters, mopeds, and motorcycles in general. I am not going to get to far in to detail why but I need a 150cc+ scooter for under $1,200.00. I am wanting to purchase it next Friday but need recommendations of which is best. I will be riding it in rain and sun shine for a few months and then I am getting something bigger and better. I do not have much mechanical experience with motors or car in general. I am comfortable doing small work with detailed instructions, no problem there. I also do not mind taking the to the shop to have fixed so as long as we are not talking about $200.00 a week on repairs. What are my options guys?

I got my Taotao 150 from family go karts,,am very happy with it,,I paid $939 delivered to my front door,,then did about $300 in upgrades, fuel lines, vac lined,filter,oil/gear change, plug to NGK,CDI&Coil upgrade, free flow exhaust,UNI POD air filter, after market Kehin carb with 118 main jet,new Kenda tires, valve stems, loctite, silicone,Gates Power link,,and now I do believe its as reliable as a SYM scooter for the most part,,and Im still under $1500
If you get that scooter or any cheap chinese scoot,,be prepared to spend some $$ on PDI and upgrades,,its well worth the investment.Change your oil every 500 miles with a good quality 10/40 and you should be good to go...if you want a push button ride reliable scoot out of the crate,,your gonna have to get a Vespa,Honda,SYM,Kymco,,something along those lines...and be prepared to spend a bit more..
As for the rain,,you will need to go around and seal up all your electrical connections real good,,focus on the CDI,Coil,Spark plug wire/cap.Get that stuff all sealed up nice and out of any splash/spray.
Hope that helped ..

I'm very happy on my TaoTao. If you like speed, performance, budget and simplicity, get the TaoTao PowerMax 150 (Px150); If you like a more mid-sized scoot (just under the deluxe size of the burgmans), get the EVO150. they sell both scoots very cheap at superiorpowersports. Usually they come ~$1k shipping included. Leaves you $300 for tag and taxes to be paid to the tag agency or DMV.
The Powermax and EVO are new scoots. You can run them stock, without mods for at least 4k miles. After that, depends on the parts. Chances are you can do another 4k miles before you need to replace something (that'll be 1 to 2 years after purchase).
They're the perfect beginner scoots. The EVO150 does 60MPH, the PX150 should do 65MPH.

I bought my Tomos in 2011 I think with about 700 miles for $1400 at a dealer. I have yet to wrench on anything just oil changes every 1000 miles. 3145 miles now
The tao tao is a popular brand around these parts. I think my Tomos is pretty popular but not as much as the tao tao.

Jerseyboy, thank you so much for the information. With your information and what I have found from Youtube, I am confident again in the purchase of the Roketa. Where would I get those upgraded parts from? In the addition to the oil change every 500 miles, those upgrades in your first paragraph, do they apply (in addition to the 2nd. paragraph) to the Roketa link I sent or was that specific for the TaoTao? Thanks in advance. You are being very helpful and I sincerely appreciate it.
Edit: Thanks to the others also for their reply. I didn't see you guys at first. Also, with the price for the TaoTao from Superior Power Sports, I can easily budget the upgrades and come in under budget. WIth this information and what I have found on Youtube, I am confident I can handle most things, even with my non mechanical skills. Also, what site would I purchase these parts from? I am looking at Motorcycle Superstore right now, and when I look for Air Filters, Exhaust and Spark Plugs, I get no option for TaoTao. Am I support to or is this normal? Any recommendations on that also? Thanks guys.

[replyingto=bcassidy1983]bcassidy1983[/replyingto]I just got back from a ride on mine and all I can say is what a rush,,that little 150 is bad with a few bolt on mods...lol..the roketa should be very similar,,and the upgrades are all basically the same,,may just find things in a different location on some models,,i highly recommend the Taotao Evo 150,,the hardest part of working on it is getting the plastic off,,but once you figure that out,,its a snap!!
i got my upgraded fuel lines(filter) from Autozone,,also gonna want to remove all the evap canisters and plug up the vacuum lines that go to them,,there is so much you can do to these scoots,,and half the fun is working on them to me.
If you have any questions feel free to ask and hopefully I can help,,if not there are plenty of gurus on here that will. Also alot of part dealers here that will be glad to help you out with whatever you need!
You see what I have done to mine in my signature,,it was all bolt on stuff,,and it runs like a beast! Its amazing how much more air comes out of the free flow exhaust with the UNI Filter,,the stock exhaust was so restricted,,its like a fire breathing dragon now...lol

Bad thing w upgrading your filter and jet is the extra rain that may enter, right?

[replyingto=domindart]domindart[/replyingto]Ahh,,the splash guard should keep the water out,,but if it gets really wet it may suck a little in,, shouldn't hurt it,,but I put my UNI inside my stock air box to take care of that The main jet is inside the float bowl so no water can get there unless it comes through the fuel line,,or the bike is submerged.
