Or even somewhere in between--- like a PS2. It has a HUGE library, and it's not "retro" enough (yet) for the games to be priced really high. It's a good time to collect, or just buy, PS2 and Xbox(the original) games.
Same with the original Wii, IMO.
If you want graphics, go with this generation, or wait until late this year for the PS4. To me it's all about fun first, graphics comes after that.

I've currently got over 2000 original game cartridges/discs and about 20 colsoles or so. And do repairs on most. -Tim I actually have an Atari 2600. I love the thing, but the sound doesn't work on it. I only have about 20 or 25 carts for it and no paddles. I have two joysticks for it. Nothing like playing those old games on the real hardware. =)

But I was actually going to save money for a Emaxx Guess I'll be saving for a game system too thanks for the suggestions The Wii would be a good choice if you want to play the old double dragon and other NES games. They have a virtual collection where you can buy most of the old games from their online store and play them on the Wii. It's pretty fun. As far as suggestions go, Cheap but good route would be PS2 like said above. TONS of games that are mostly fun and best part...mostly CHEAP too! I actually have an Atari 2600. I love the thing, but the sound doesn't work on it. I only have about 20 or 25 carts for it and no paddles. I have two joysticks for it. Nothing like playing those old games on the real hardware. =) I couldn't agree more! I have emulators and roms but never touch them. For me, there's no comparison for real hardware. It's always great to sit down with a few people and play games where you have to SHARE controllers or play on the same screen..lol.

I'm not a true collector by any means, but I like me some semi-classic gaming. I have a NES with a small selection of games including the original Contra and Zelda (of course). The SNES is where the fun really is... I have my old SNES and a shoebox packed full of games. Some highlights: Super Metroid A Link to the Past Donkey Kong Country Killer Instinct Mortal Kombat 2 Super Street Fighter 2 Kirby Super Star (with box and manual) Zombies Ate My Neighors Starfox 64 Stunt Race FX Top Gear Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtle Tournament Fighters (Just found a couple a weeks ago at my local Goodwill store in a basket full of Madden and NBA game carts) ...and a good many others. I also have a Dreamcast that isn't working right now. It may just need the LASER cleaned, but I haven't had the chance to do that. I have a semi-functional PS2 and a few games, but it's a first-gen PS2 and won't play a lot of games anymore. I have a Wii, one of the first-gen models that still had the Gamecube compatibility. It didn't get as much play as I had hoped and I ended up mostly playing the older Gamecube games as those can be purchased VERY cheap from Half.com. I got super-lucky when I bought the Wii because Wal-Mart was getting rid of their Gamecube stock and I was able to get a genuine Wavebird controller for about $15. I have an XBox 360 slim, that replaced an aging XBox 360 that wouldn't read newer game discs. Favorite games on that system are: <editing to add>Batman: Arkham Asylum easily my favorite on the console, and Arkham City, which, is still good, but not quite the level of excellence of Arkham Asylum Bad Company (The original) Ace Combat 6 Earth Defense Force 2017 ...and all of the Lego Movie tie-in games. My wife and I have and play ALL of the currently released titles (Except for Lego Star Wars 3) as the co-op gameplay is fantastic and they are fun without being frustrating. Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga Lego Indiana Jones Lego Indiana Jones 2 (my least favorite) Lego Batman Lego Batman 2 Lego Pirates of the Caribbean Lego Harry Potter parts 1&2 Lego Lord of the Rings ...and looking forward to the new Lego Marvel game coming out soon. Also, get the Blu-Ray of the Lego Batman 2 movie, it's awesome and a lot of fun. It combines the cutscenes from the game with a lot of extra footage to make a Batman/Superman crossover movie that works really well, all set in the Lego world! www.amazon.com/LEGO-Batman-Movie-Heroes-Blu-ray/dp/B00B5ARKDEWe just got a used PS3 from my brother-in-law but my wife plays that one. She likes the Final Fantasy games and is looking forward to getting Skyrim and Ni-No-Kuni for that.

There are a lot of new games that are good for the Wii too right?
I might look into that.
I had a Sega and Sega CD but I think I recently sold it. I'll have to look in the attic and see if I still have it.

I'll have to look in the attic and see if I still have it. Not so much for the Wii since it never got a lot of love from the big developers. First-Party Nintendo titles are great of course, but it mostly ends up being a Wii Sports/Wii Sports Resort title to play tennis and bowling on. Mario Kart is good, and the Zelda titles are good if you like the newer Zelda gameplay. I didn't play them but watched my wife play through both Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, and Twilight Princess was the more enjoyable game. Since the Wii isn't a High-Def device, a lot of the newer games didn't transfer over as well or were dumbed-down vs. the PS3/360 versions. Instead of buying a Wii, I would suggest you look into an Xbox 360 since those are fairly cheap for the base-model system. There may be another price drop in the near future as the 360 is near the end-of-life with the XBox One is nearing launch. Used games can be had very cheaply via Half.com. A lot of great games can be purchased for $20 new and there is a huge library of great games since the system is so old. It has aged very well. Arkham Asylum has been one of the best 360 games I have ever played... You know it's good when you are playing and suddenly realize that your aren't playing the game anymore. IT IS PLAYING YOU! (not exaggerating either; that happens about 2/3 of the way through the game, it's a great moment!) If you don't PC game, you can get the Orange Box and Portal 2 for the 360 as well. These Valve games offer a huge amount of fantastic gaming. The Orange Box has Half Life, Half Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2, and the first Portal game. Portal 2 expands greatly on the first Portal with an incredible first-person-puzzle gameplay, fantastic writing, and a great story with excellent humor throughout.

friend of mine makes a living through ebay and scrap metal. he gets most of his merchandise through storage auctions and curbside pick up (trash day). usually trash runs only get him scrap metal but occasionally he finds things he can sell on ebay. yesterday all at one house he found 3 game systems and about 20 games. (i'd have to ask him to get an exact count). said most of the games go for $10 but one sells for $80-$100 on ebay. who throws this stuff out? wow!

Damn... throwing out game systems... probably some old woman i don't think the game systems work. he hooked up the N64 and got a red power light. couldn't get any games to come on but they are still worth money for parts. he is going to assume the games work and just offer refund if anyone has problem.
