Ok so I'm installing the rings on the piston and I'm following the install guide and it says the silver ring is the top and the black ring is the second, we'll one top one is black with a silver lip so I think that's correct. But then none of them have any markings on them to tell which way is up or down. Does it matter, they look the same both ways? Also I was gonna gap my top Ron to .008" and the second ring to .010"
Ok so after measuring the all black ring which has the flat edges like a rectangle measures out at .008" and the ring with the silver edge to it also has a bevel to it on both sides of the ring, and it's gap measures out to .010" So it seems like it's back words

What would this mark look like? I can't see any marks on either ring. They are totally plain. I cleaned the oil off them and shined a light on them and looked all over everything and I have 20/15 vision and can see them crystal clear and no marks to speak of. This is a scrappy bbk 50mm

The set of 50mm rings I'm sitting here looking at has a chrome top ring with TJo stamped on the top side The black second ring has D stamped on the top. The thinner oil rings are black with a silver lip.
The top rings are usually all silver or all copper colored but can also be black with a marking on the top. I have not seen them with different colored lips. Though it is possible. If they are not marked you may need to look at the edge and see if it has a bevel. some rings have a single bevel and some are double beveled.

Question,How many rings total do you have in your kit? If it is a four stroke you should have 5 rings total. The first ring, the second ring, a thin top and bottom oil ring, and a wavy oil ring. A photo of the markings on the top ring. I used a magnifying glass to enlarge. The second ring. This is one of the oil rings, there is no markings. All three oil rings. Roy

Yea it has five rings, two skinny oil rings and one wavy oil ring and one black square cut second ring and one black with a silver edge, both edges away from the piston are beveled. I assume it's my top ring. I think I'm gonna just put it in cuz from what I've read if they both have a bevel then there is no wrong way to install them and no one seems to have seen my type of rings before lol.
And I'm not new to engines, I've got myself a 22re and 6mge that I e done quite a bit if engine work to

Ive done bunches of big bore kits all the rings had markings doubt it matters much which way they face as long as they are in the right order and gapped correctly

Ok I got it installed and running. I went to turn it over at first and thought I had too high if compression because the electric start would engage the Bendix but not turn the engine unless I kick started it at te same time. Stupid thing was that my battery was fine two days before and apparently it was bad now. So I modified the battery lid to except the next size larger battery pumping out 120cca instead of the original 90cca...
So it turned on instantly and I let it idle for 20 minutes and goosed it two or three times to see if it would rev and it's seeming to do fine, it is smoking on and off some, definitely an oil smoke not a rich fuel smoke. This is normal right? As the rings seat? From what I've read about cars that's normal, and the mount of smoke varies, some times it's no smoke, other times it fain and other times its like a worn out two stroke. I've only ha it running for that 20min just idling on the stand at about 3300rpms. Shut it off to let it get cold again and I'll turn it on tomorrow and maybe take it around the block. I could tell just from revving it that it revs 110% faster! So that's good lol

I had some rings that were that way-- appeared to have no markings. Not sure if they were just smudged off or what. I think most of us would feel much better, if they had markings. To be able to just put them in order, with the marking side up, and call it a day...is nice.
