Yep that was me on outlaw. I have 3 times in the last 20 years had a motorcycle permit but I only tried the MVD test once. I did it 20 years ago when I first started riding on my second bike a ' Honda Shadow 1100. The test was very tight and well, I failed. I have had test anxiety ever since. I have ridden so many different bikes in some very tight spots and even raced them but, I have been an outlaw since then. I have grown sick of it. I was doing something I was against in so many ways. I like to think I am a pretty good rider and had read the MSF materials more than once and I am constantly reading about riding strategies and on and on. I believe in safety. So I ponied up the $271 to the local Harley shop and took their Rider's Edge Course sanctioned by the MSF. I completed it yesterday with a perfect score on the riding test and a 97.5% on the written. I also received the "Picture Perfect Riding Posture" award. The riding portion was very easy but I still learned a lot about bad habits I have and insight into many other things. I know have the bike I always have wanted and an actual license to ride it. I am totally stoked I finished at the MVD this morning and got the plates for the Vespa and my new endorsed license. I am now a full fledged hardcore scooterist. To sum it up if you are riding illegally because of the testing required or whatever take the course you won't regret it! The riding course was my vacation for this summer but I'm glad I did it.

I did it 20 years ago when I first started riding on my second bike a ' Honda Shadow 1100. The test was very tight and well, I failed.... I got my driver's license in 1962. As far as I know, there was no such thing as a motorcycle license. Had a new 1964 Honda CA110, moved to California, into the Air Force in '66 rode in Mississippi, Izmir Turkey, back to L.A., get a '74 DT175, went to the DMV on a Sunday and tried the "lollypop" and said "No WAY!" So I didn't even bothered. No crashes, no tickets, never stopped by any cop, no need for a license. Married, couldn't justify a vehicle I couldn't carry babies, stopped riding for a while, kids older, needed a replacement vehicle, my wife suggested a motorcycle. Being a "responsible" family man I had to get my license, after 40 years of being an "Outlaw." At the CMSP class over half were old riders getting legal. And, like you, I learned, particularly how you can do the Lollypop. AND, in 2010 I finally got stopped by a cop. So it was good that I had gotten my license.

All but 4 in my class of 12 were experienced riders. One was a former REAL outlaw biker even, he'd been riding for 50 years.

I should have got mine when I was 16 but in NM riding without it was not really a big deal in the last year they have started ticketing and impounding motorcycles. I am sick of looking over my shoulder and I don't want the Vespa to go to jail she's to pretty
