I have a 50cc Yamaha Vino that is very dependent on the temperature as far as how long it takes to start.
I have to kickstart the scooter when I start it in the morning and the electric starter only works after the scooter has been ridden and has warmed up a bit.
I have noticed that when it is cold outside neither the electric starter nor the kickstarter will work right away, in which case the only way that I've found to start the engine is to set the killswitch to "off" and crank the kickstarter a few dozen times before setting the killswitch to run and kickstarting as normal. The colder it is, the more I have to crank the kickstarter (which is probably putting unnecessary wear on the scooter).
I don't know what would be causing this issue; any help would be greatly appreciated.

First I would make sure you electric enricher is operating. Then if that's good maybe vaccum lines. I'm thinking your enricher is bad.

I'd suspect it has to do with the fuel system. If that's ok, then perhaps check your oil. Usually if your scooter does that with 10W40 oil, try 5W40 or 5W30 oil. I don't know what oil you have, but if you reduce the first number one step (by 5), your scooter will start up better. (eg: if you have 15W40 in it, which is too heavy for a 50cc, get 10W40)

[replyingto=prodigit]prodigit[/replyingto]Are there different weights for two-stroke oil? It's been a while since I purchased oil for the scooter.

[replyingto=prodigit]prodigit[/replyingto]By the way, is is possible to change my notification settings so that I receive an e-mail when someone replies to my posts? Kind of confused about how this forum relates to proboards. It seems that it is a proboards forum and yet changes i make to my proboard account to do not seem to be reflected in this forum.

If you're having a 2 stroke, ignore the comment about oils. It won't apply to you. Just up the idle a bit.

DX also need to adjust the A/F screw for cold weather conditions. cold air is more dense which creates a lean condition making it hard to start... if adjusting the A/F ratio doesn't work then you'll need to rejet.

So I should up the idle by adjusting the A/F bolt? A/F as in airflow?

Crank it over like you have been doing about 5 times and then take the plug out. If it is DRY you have fuel delivery problem if WET you have a NO SPARK or WEAK SPARK. If your carb has a AN ENRICHER, Take it off before you attempt to start it and lay it on its side. If it LOOKS LIKE THIS IT IS EXTENDED and NOT FEEDING FUEL this is what it should look like after the motor is running for about 3-4 minutes: When you first take it out COLD it should look like this RETRACTED this way it feeds fuel for cold starts: THEN take your thumb and cover the HOLE AND hold your thumb on it and TRY to start it. That should feed it plenty of fuel for it to fire. Alleyoop

[replyingto=alleyoop]alleyoop[/replyingto]Okay, let me see if I understand what you are saying here. I should crank the kickstarter 5 times and check if there is any fuel in the combustion chamber. If there is not, then there is probably a fuel delivery problem, which I might be compensating for by cranking the kickstarter more than normal. If the combustion chamber is wet, that would suggest a weak spark plug (I know the spark plug is working at least somewhat since the scooter runs). I think I follow you up until you say “THEN take your thumb and cover the HOLE AND hold your thumb on it and TRY to start it. That should feed it plenty of fuel for it to fire.” What hole are you referring to here?
