Why cant I see a spark on the plug like you can on a lawnmower or other small engine???

because your not actually getting enough volts at the plug to cause it to spark, or spark strongly, OR, its not grounded enough to show it, the engine acts as a ground for the plug so it sparks more inside of the cylinder head than while you have it exposed

Try a darker place and be sure it is grounded and the plug is the boot tight and killswitch on
