The Italian guys don't come close in terms of volume. Yes they are great scoots but their market share is quite tiny. India and Taiwan pretty much have it all wrapped up

Japan is in east Asia, And no, I'm sure Kaw isn't in love with all this Chinese two wheeled action. No matter how you cut it it can't be good for the big 4

I thought Japan was an island... I guess I should have said are on the mainland (India specifically). My point was the US's big 4 are not the world's big 4 I apologize I thought we were discussing scooters. A full size motorcycle with Chinese spec welding and steel is kinda scary isn't it?
What I'm saying is current levels of Chinese production are not threatening to the big 4 scooter or otherwise. They can do a better job but there isn't much cost savings when they do...

The problem for the states were that a lot of Chinese scooter businesses were trying to sell scooters that didn't have approved safety equipment on them, non-DOT approved parts and were not EPA approved either. Some of the scooter importers tried to cheat the system as well. They did get away with it for a few years, but the various state agencies got wise to it and started to clamp down on them. The scooter importers are still trying various tricks and stuff to sell scooters though. Your best bet is to buy locally though in order to avoid winding up with a fancy lawn ornament where you have something that can't be registered in your state. There have been quite a few horror stories of people getting stuck with scooters that way too.
