Actually I think he did take care of it. Things just happen, he did put 10,000 miles on it.

Actually I think he did take care of it. Things just happen, he did put 10,000 miles on it. hmm thats average miles I have seen them do 20,000 mile easy without flywheel problems to pistons being chewed up etc. What ever it may be. I guess it could have been related to not the right mods early enough. I am not sure I just never hear about that problem past 10,000 miles on the forum.

That's the exact JCL/Jonway (Linhia powered) scooter I'm looking for here in FL. . Same color , same price , same rebuild. I want to put a 300 (275cc) kit on it. My girlfriend has a JCL exactly like it color and all and it is one nice scooter for a Chinese Jobby. Great find and good luck.

Not true, I have one right now in my shop that has been a freakin pain in the back side.
It's got like 900 miles on it, and so far it's had the starter clutch replaced, the intake manifold replaced, the air box was replaced with a unifilter because the stock air box was junk, new cvt clutch... and an enricher. This bike has just been a pain. I guess there is a lemon in every batch... It's the honda clone.

Ya, I am trying to get my scooter fixed up, after the wind blew it over in a storm last week. Got a $311 check from the insurance company. Already ordered diamond shaped mirrors, a new windshield, new helmet sheet, and new mount board. The mount board is white and my scooter is blue. So glad I got blue paint about the same shade. lol.. Looking into chrome trimming- $14 for 20 feet. Looking and getting 3m arrow turn signals the place on windshield to add safety caution.. $12.. I am glad you are happy with the Jonway 250.. Nice looking scooter..

Doug , have you pulled the plug or valve cover ? Any visible hot spots , around the exaust valve . Would explain the alunimum in the oil . Any compression ?
Just a guess here I think the stator is submerged in engine oil , have the shards damaged the stator ?

John,
No, I have not checked out the top end yet. All the metal was ferrous, stuck to a magnet, no piston parts there that I have found.
I will look over the coils and see if there seems to be any damage.

Doug, any update to what you found? I had the valve cover off and everything was normal there. I am curious to know what you found/find. Had good compression, did not use any oil. Has had synthetic in it since 1000 miles.

OK, a little more here. I used about ten feet of rope in the cylinder to hold the crank still so I could get the variator and the flywheel off the crank shaft. Worked real well doing it that way. There were ridges worn on the crank, I am nor sure it makes the crank worn out. One of the theories about what the problem was, was a bad key on the crank, it was fine. Braking this puppy loose was a challenge, it was on there tight. When in popped it made a crack that sounded as though something did break, Anyway the flywheel looked good, I was not aware that the clutch for the starter is actually on the backside of this, I'll have to check it out later. The bushing one the starter driven gear looks real rough, I will replace the entire thing, I thought I took a pic of it but guess I missed that. I was pretty happy with the way the head looked, I'll pull the valves out later and see if they look good. The cylinder looked very good, no ridge at all I should have taken a few more pictures. If anybody has anything to let me know about these please chime in, this is my first water cooled bike motor. I did test it for play on the crank but pushing, pulling and wiggling the piston, seemed to be a little loose to me. I was wondering if the play in the oil pump drive chain was too much. For piece of mind, the chain, gear and pump will be replaced anyway.

Aww man, bummer, Yeah you'll need to open up the engine to see where the bits of metal is coming from for sure. I can;t think of anything to cause it off hand, but you might get lucky if it is just the stator or something that came apart. The problem is not knowing how long it may have been run that way though. It sort of has me wondering if the fellow who had it before you abused it in some manner, such as running it low on oil or using a junk grade oil in it.
They use a fixed length chain for the oil pump, a little slack is Ok as it only turns in one direction. It is where one link is a bit too long but one less less is too short.
You might be able to find a used engine from someone who wrecked their ride too.
If you don't have it, you might want to get a tube of Yamabond works great for sealing the crankcase back up when you put it back together.
Being ferrous metal makes me think a bearing went bad somewhere.

He said he broke it in with dino oil and then used synthetic oil for the next 9000 miles before it did this. THe oil in it was pretty good looking when I drained it.

I suspect that scoring on the crankshaft at the starter gear is from when the starter relay stuck and ran the starter while riding until the battery went dead.

How many miles back did it do that. Is that why you put the ford relay in it?

I think that was in mid March so maybe 1000 miles ago. And yes that is the reason for the Ford/horn relay arrangement. I assure you that when you hit the starter switch the starter snaps to attention.
