I was idling at a stoplight yesterday when my scooter started making this noise: photos.app.goo.gl/zMiUmkxUGcvP3Pzk8Any idea what could be causing this? I just ordered a flywheel puller and starter clutch tool in case I need them. Thanks in advance

Turns out one of the bearings on the overhead cam failed. the outer race was loosely moving around the camshaft. This threw the timing off. The variator was damaged as well. After I installed a new variator, overhead cam and reset the valve clearances, my scooter is running again. I'm planning to split the crankcase this winter to check that the oil pump is working and free of debris.

I've never herd of a camshaft failing in on of these things ever and ive had 1 run without oil, run with intentionally debris dirty oil. The same cam was used in different engines. lol
Where did you get that camshaft?
What happened to the variator? I think that is an isolated incident. One time I had the ignition pickup coil somehow come loose and create the same noise you had followed by a misfire because that part signals the cdi to fire.
I think splitting the case is a little overzealous unless you are upgrading the crank and or oil pump. If the oil pump were damaged you would know by now.
