When I bought my Honda Reflex, the guy who owned it before me dropped it and scratched-up the side pretty badly. I got some spray paint from an auto paint shop, without hardener, that matches the color (silver) exactly, but I apparently did not prepare the surface properly and you could still see the impression of the scratches. Then I dropped it when getting it off the carrier on the bac ???k of my truck and scratched the same area. Does anyone have some pointers on what I need to do to make the repair look decent., without resorting to having it professional done.
Thanks.

you will need to sand the scratches smooth
Start with maybe some 200 grit wet and dry sand paper, be sure to run water over it as you sand, then when you think it is smooth use some 400 grit wet and dry and then go to 600 to 1000. the finer the better.
You may have hit the plastic by the time you are done with it and a primer coat would be appropriate, you will need to hit the primer with some 600 and 1000, prep is everything in painting.
After you primed the area and sanded it you can use a little steel wool on it, wipe it down with a tack cloth to clean it then put your color on and it should be nice and smooth.
A clear coat over it all is best, if you do that at least hit the color coat with some steel wool and a tack cloth then put your color on.
Now your probably not going to have a perfect match and you might want to to do the entire panel.
After it has all cured you can hit the clear with some 1000 grit or even finer paper to get it nice and smooth, then use some polishing compound on it to make it really shine.
If you don't want to do all that you still need to sand it down or you can use a primer with a filler in it, they cover small scratches, it will still need sanding and you will still want to put the color coat on and it will look best with a clear coat on top of that.
Have fun.
