I just saw an auction for a flight helmet. Which made me wonder--why DO pilots wear helmets? It's not like it's gonna help them survive if they crash. There's a HUGE diff between driving a scooter, even one that goes 100+ mph, and driving a jet fighter plane.
While I am completely ATGATT, this one suddenly doesn't quite make sense to me.

Random Thoughts in Response...
Protect head while ejecting?
Protect head while parachuting to ground?
Protect from shrapnel or shattered glass/canopy?
I initially thought this was an engine idle question... 😉

Kat,
Floridagull got it right... I friend of mine was a fighter-pilot in Viet Nam and he says about the same... The helmet does protect one from a LOT of potential mayhem other than a crash... Which will usually kill you...
The newest helmets also have all sorts of technology for hands-free communication, flying, aiming guns/missiles, etc. but you won't find them for sale... LOL!
I'll just be glad when I finally again have a USE for MY old helmet! LOLOLOL!

When I was in the USMC, all pilots wore helmets except C-130 drivers. The other exception were the helicopter pilots that flew the president and other government people, in squadron HMX-1. -There were two types of flight helmets. Plane and jet pilots wore a close fitting helmet that could attach an oxygen mask. Helicopter helmets were bigger and emphasized sound attenuation. -Flight instructors in the T-34 liked to rapidly throw it into a tight turn to smash the students head against the canopy. -There were many reasons to wear helmets in helicopters. Helicopters have so many heavy parts spinning at high speed that a catastrophic mechanical failure, even on the ground, can spray a large area with metal parts (like if a blade breaks off due to corrosion. All those rotating parts become unbalanced, forcing major parts to break and spin off). -Helmets also make it easy to mount night vision goggles, weapons sights, etc.

Wheelbender6,35 years ago, I was enjoying a new little speedboat and threw it into a tight turn, throwing my Wife into the lake... LOL! I was brand-new to boats, and didn't realize they can turn a LOT harder than cars!So young, and SO much yet to learn... Good thing she landed in WATER! Like old pilots tell me: "If water was REALLY hard as ground, you'd see pelicans diving for gophers"...….

" I was enjoying a new little speedboat and threw it into a tight turn, throwing my Wife into the lake" Funny! I hope you weren't in the dog house for too long after that.

I have a friend who crashed his small Citabria, He said if he hadn't been wearing the flight helmet he'd be dead.
