What a nostalgic looking engine!
I well-remember the old JAWA bikes from the 1950's... Probably around 150-250cc looking much like this new one. Talk about "unique"... They were 2-strokes, two-cylinder with SINGLE combustion-chamber. They were no world-beaters but reliable "workhorse" engines powering stone-age looking pressed-steel bikes that looked truly awful to us back then. Today, they look sorta "old-school-cool"...

I remember Jawa for the 4 stroke speedway engines, more than the 2 stroke street bikes. As you said, the Jawa street bikes were not high performance machines. The Jawa made CZ motocrossers were plenty fast.

I've always loved the cosmetic look of speedway bikes... Sort of the very essence of a genuine bobber save for the nearly vertical front forks. I wonder if any old-school riders ever tried converting the total race motors on these to some semblance of streetability with closed oil system, adding lights, BRAKES and some rake to the front fork and having the nastiest single-cylinder thumper on the planet? It would be a monumental task, but the resulting little rocket would be a head-turner (and potential money-maker)… Besides, they just LOOK so cool!

A legalized speedway bike would be a blast around town. I saw a pic of a legalized one in the UK. THE 500CC Jawa, both old and new versions, have no gear box. You would need to rig a cvt to reach more streetable speeds.

My Dad had a 1963 Jawa motocrosser. It handled well, was moderately powered but fairly big. It originally had a defective crankshaft but once he changed it the bike was fairly reliable. It was a conventional single cylinder two stroke but had two separate exhaust pipes much like the twin pipe CZ. He never raced it though. He bought a 250 Bultaco Pursang for that. Now that was a scary bike.
