Hello to everyone, new to the forum, I am from Massachusetts and have been bitten by the Scoot bug as of last year. I did my first bbk (100cc aka 83cc) build on my TaoTao 49cc 1P39QMB engine last week, 69mm valves. I installed a performance ignition system, and a performance variator as well as a #83 Jet for the carb. My issue is this, Before I installed the variator and Jet upgrade, the scoot would lift the front wheel off the ground at take off, but she was running really high rpm's at the top end and I could only run at 3/4 throttle for fear of over revving the engine. Since the variator (6.5gr rollers) and the rejetting, I have a steady power band and seems like I am not reaching top end, the rpm's are mid range ( I have no tach) she seems like she wants to keep going, topping off around 40 - 45. The "snap" off the line is also gone, she was very "torqy" before the variator and jet. Is the jetting the issue or the Variator? I'm still new to this and at 55 years old, I need a bit of help to figure some of this out from time to time. I am a quick study, very mechanically inclined picking the brains of the scooter gods....

Ok first since this is new to you you must get a Tach on her to tune. you really have no idea what 5,6 or 7,000rpm sounds or feels like and even if you heard it couple times it takes a ton of experience to tune by the seat of the pants. We really need to know the rpm's at the top to determine if they are to high What about your Clutch and main Springs what are they? What was your old Vari? What is the new Vari? What gram weight rollers were in your old Var? Have you put the old Vari back on and what result did you get? What was you jetting before? Is your jetting correct across the rpm range? have you read the plug? have a pic of the plug? Pictures tell a ton, take and post a bunch of pictures. www.trailtech.net/tto

Pistonguy, Thanks for the reply! I will be getting the tach soon, I got some of the bugs worked out. I have no clue as to the original equipt specs before the upgrade. I readjusted my valve clearance and she has smoothed out now. The plug is clean, burning a tan color. The clutch is stock, will be replacing that as soon as it arrives. Now I ran into a new issue! lol... All of a sudden, after shutting her off, I can no longer start her via the starter, just will not turn her over, struggles bad. I tried a new starter, same thing. I remove the spark plug and she turns over nice and easy, also by hand. So thinking the bbk finally "seated" and compression has jumped? I will check compression as soon as that tolol gets here. I went out and bought a new WolfRX50 and will ride that until I get this worked out.
I am going to pull the motor and bench it, tear down and take my time, rebuild adding new crank, clutch and carb. I will post exact specs as I have them. I'm just picking everyone's brain for information as to better educate myself around this.

Variator 5g is stock go back to 5grams. I tried 7g to slow on the take off. I'm using 6g now and I'm going back to the 5g. I have the same motor as you. The jet is ok.

You need to adjust your valves to .004 int and .004 ex it should start right up unless your timing is off. Check your timing also.
