Kat,Sounds like you're about ready for the season! Yes, do watch your tires. Any signs of dry-rot or checking/cracking is a good warning to put your pennies away for a new set... When you DO replace them, also, please replace the valve-stems with good ones. They only cost a couple of bucks extra when the dealer has the tires off the rim and can save you potential problems down the road... Trust me, it will feel GREAT to "get your knuckles back in the wind"! Health issues have kept me from riding WAY too much. I finally got back to riding a little in the last week after getting my new rear tire. I was amazed at how "foreign" it felt at first, but after just a few miles it all comes back. When I made the mistake of letting soapy hands DROP the old Mouse, I also wrenched my right hand in a failed attempt to "catch" my 360-pound pal... So... I got some practice taking my own advice riding "monkey-grip"... LOL! First time since going to scooters that I've missed having a foot brake... My dealer (Moxie Scooters) in addition to Genuine (Stella, Buddy, Chicago Scooter) Lance, Fly, Kymco and SYM, is now also a dealer for Vespa, and most everything made by Piaggio and the tall-wheel scoots like yours are selling VERY well! All displacement sizes... This season, it seems the "BV 350" is the flavor of the year. I must admit they are an amazing mix of what riders want in a SCOOTER and a CYCLE. Sort of a ride that appeals to most everyone except the "purist" who demands a scooter have small wheels, and cycle have clutch and gears... They really ARE "growing on me"...Ride safe!Leo (reminding you to ride EXTRA safe those first 20 miles or so) in Texas Well, not QUITE ready for the season (see the following post...) As for the valve stems, remind me next spring when I get the new tires. 'Cause I'll have slept and eaten many times between now and then, and won't remember. Otherwise, next year's conversation--"Spring tune and oil change, please. And you said last year I'll need new tires. Oh yeah, and UncaLeo said for something else...." "Brakes?" "No...." "We do check all the electrical." "Nooo....." "Do you remember what it started with?" "Uh, it started with tire...I think?..... " "?? ??" >'Kat

And why I'm not quite ready for the season, and why I'm a little less pleased with ScooterWorld right now.
First, they left my scoot outside. Either that, or they have birds inside. There was a big spot of bird poop on one of the dash-dials to where it got under the edge there. And another down the side of my seat. And it didn't happen while towed 'cause that poop is straight down. Peej has NEVER been outside uncovered. Had they told me, I would've sent my bike cover with them. Not happy about that.
Second, they left me with maybe 1/32 of a tank of gas. So, basically none. I got all geared up and was admittedly apprehensive and sent a thought to Dan my Harley friend that he was very def' right about not driving home from the shop. Got on the bike and apprehension went away and excitement took over 'cause I was about to drive for the first time in approx 1.5 years. Turned him on and he didn't respond well, stuttered some and also idled like crap, even dying the first time. The second time I kept the throttle up and then noticed there's no gas. So hey, I got to let him run then turn him off then ungear and go inside 'cause I'm not getting the gas can and driving newish car to the gas station still tonight 'cause it's too dark at that point to scoot. They could've so easily have filled him up and charged me the $7 or whatever premium costs. Instead they ran him empty and left him. Very less happy about that.
I'm calling tomorrow to point out both. If it was only the poop I wouldn't bother. But they really need to engage a common sense brain cell and look at the gauge and think "Oh gosh, it's right at empty, let's put some gas in there for her." ESPECIALLY when I've told everyone there I've talked with that I haven't driven much and need to get back into it. VERY especially 'cause what if I don't happen to own a gas can? We were going to sell it when we moved and sold Mom's little John Deere, or even considered including it with the mower. Luckily we decided to keep it, "just in case you know." Well, it's just in case now.
Not. Happy.

Kat, Cheer up... They COULD have left the crankcase empty of OIL!!!
A car dealer did that to me in 1970 with a brand new car! I started it after an "oil change" and in seconds it sounded like a handful of monkey-wrenches tossed into a tree-chipper... Then all the idiot-lights came on. "Duh... I guess we forgot to put the oil in after draining the old stuff..." "Don't worry, the car's under warranty"... Double duh... When they put five quarts of 10W-30 in the dry block, the mechanic started it, and... More clank, bang and idiot lights...Seems they ALSO forgot to install a new oil-filter after removing the old one... All the new oil barfed out upon starting... Double, DOUBLE duh... As for birdy-doo... Ah, I think scooters thrive on it... LOL! Nah... Not really. I usually notice it AFTER sitting in it. I keep "Minnie Mouse" covered all the time too, BUT... My local Wal-Mart is INFESTED with grackles... Thousands and THOUSANDS of the little beasties in EVERY tree... They almost need a snow-plow to clear the walkways so you don't slip and fall in the gooey stuff... EEEEWWWWW! With my feral cat pals often squatting under the cover, I sometimes encounter more kitty-doo... The missus sometimes sarcastically snickers "...the scoot's sat a while... did ya' sit in any Kathmandu?" Seriously, your dealer did fall short of "exemplary" service. Really no excuse for the dry fuel-tank. Just to be safe, you might want to check the oil level, coolant and tire-pressure. Sounds like the folks working on yours may have been a little "unattentive" to say the least. Always best to check and double-check. All will be fine again when you get Peej gassed up and on the road! Ride safe! Leo

I just did that, piston! My Harley-friend stopped by Weds while I was at work and gave me a LOT of gas! I'm two dashes up now, rather than barely off the E. I definitely owe him. Then Thurs it drizzled all day. As in seriously all day long, non-stop drizzle. Useless moisture that didn't water anything just made the streets all wet. And Fri I got home too late to scootie around. But today. Ah, today! Got on Peej and buzzed around the big loop in our 'hood. Then switched directions to get left turns in. And quickly got bored, so went around the block outside the neighborhood, which is still very lightly traveled. Rights and lefts and close to 40mph. Man it sure felt good being back on Peej! I'd like to jump right in and scoot to work this week, but I probably should practice a bit more, esp with more traffic. Unca Leo, it's a good thing I wear a full-face, or there'd be bugs in my grin for sure! >'Kat, hoping weather and wellness cooperate for a season!

Oh, and I called ScooterWorld. The guy got out my ticket and said I didn't get my carb cleaned and that's usually when they drain and replace gas. I said that's not the point, the point is apparently nobody ever looked at the gauge to see they'd run me nearly empty. I admitted that in Jan (the last time I idled Peej, due to the battery being dead a couple weeks later) I noticed I had a bit over the last dash (a 1/16 ?) It never occurred to me the techs would drive enough to use almost all of it. I said that yes, I understand they need to drive around to make sure everything's working fine. And that's totally great with me. But someone should've noticed how low the gas had gotten, and at the very least called me to let me know. Or just taken the initiative and added a little. It obviously doesn't take much gas to get to a less scary level!
The guy finally understood. And he totally agreed that it was something they should've noticed. And will mention it to the techs. I said that's all I wanted, to make them aware of the spot they'd left me in.
And I'll know for next year to say something about "ok to add gas if it's too low".

And the latest update. I decided to scootie to the bank and library, and possibly to work. I checked my blinkers and brakes as always. I didn't see any red light behind me, but then again Peej isn't very close to the wall right now (Mom's been clearing, and putting the boxes in the garage). After I bought 1/60 of the car, I asked the lady not behind the counter if she was allowed to go outside and could she check if my brake lit up please. She said there were four lights, two on each side. I said those are the regular tail lights, and as I squeezed the brake asked if a bright light in the middle came on. Nope. Squeezed the other brake, now? Nope. Squeeze and squeeze and squeeze while asking now? now? now? No light. I called ScooterWorld and told him. He said come on over and they'll look at it. By which he apparently meant "You'll have to leave it 'cause Piaggio made it a major hctib to get to the lightbulb back there." Why do makers do stupid-ssa design like that? Ford did the same with my Focus' headlight--if the light burns out, they'll pretty much have to completely dismantle the fixture to get in there. So I'm once again sans scootie. I was all ready to go driving, to practice going to work tom so I can start scooting instead of carring. And for now I can't. I'm guessing they'll be done Mon, but I have Jazz that eve. Maybe Tues I can pick up Peej if they're done. I hope so, I'm ready to SCOOT! >'Kat

Could be worse...I recall one VW that requires removal of either the bumper or the battery and washer tank to replace one of the headlight bulbs.

My car-mech told me about GM cars (possibly Pontiacs?) of a certain year that you have to basically remove the entire front fascia to get to the headlights. My Focus took three mechs, with the owner looking on "supervising" (translation he got there after his minions were already fighting the headlight fixture, so instead talked with me HA!), the complete removal of the entire fixture, then a set of extremely long-handled or possibly long-nosed pliers of some sort, to replace the random amber bulb which isn't the turn signal so I'm not sure what it does. I AM sure that it ain't getting replaced again the next time it burns out. What the first mech said would only take a few minutes ended up taking about 20--including 10 minutes past closing. Then they didn't charge me, not even for the bulb. Said they'll write it off as training and "go away now, Kathy." This, plus finding zero online re: changing the BV's tail light, plus watching a youtube on changing a Fly's assembly (its rear end looks very similar to Peej's), PLUS finding a warning that the fixture can crack easily while removing/replacing, all combine to convince me that this is worth whatever SW charges. And no, I will NEVER try doing this myself (my answer to my best friend's email which said "surely you can find instructions online and do it for almost no cost)! >'Kat

Kat,My old Kymco is "sorta" easy to get to the tail-lights, but HEADLIGHTS?... Forget it! One of the first things I did on "Minnie Mouse" was to rig a BIG LED auxiliary stop-light on the trunk. My trunk is SO large, it almost blocks the factory rear lights, and having a bright stop-light at windshield-level is a good safety measure, and is there should the factory light go out. I also added aux. turn-signals with the brake-lights. Looks like Vegas on Saturday night!Adding an extra tail or stop-light is very easy. Just splice into the wiring and add a ground. Your dealer can point out the proper color wire for any light you want to hook into. I got prompted to add the higher-up stop-light after being "thumped" twice coming to a stop at intersections by drivers who swear they couldn't see my factory lights... Of course, THAT was because they were about a foot off my rear end... You always want PLENTY of light on your tail-feathers... I'm glad you got the dealer to fix yours, and he didn't gouge you. If you ever decide to REALLY light up the rear of Peej, it isn't expensive (a few bucks for LED's, wire and splices) and it's easy to do. Rides safe!Leo

Leo, I passed on a matching Vespa trunk with light for something fairly stupid-cheap like maybe $50 or $75 (forgive my memory, it was probably close to shortly after I got Peej 10 years ago) I found a box the same dimensions and strapped it to Peej's little luggage rack. And HATED how it looked, hanging off his rear like the afterthought it was.
I'll admit that today, I did wish I hadn't passed on it. But looking at some scoots there at SW with the trunk, I was reminded how much I really dislike the look of the trunk hanging off the backend. Just doesn't appeal to my esthetics. Nothing against Minnie's looks, and maybe in black I wouldn't mind 'cause it wouldn't stand out so much. But the white ones today just confirmed I did right not getting that trunk.
Although hauling around my helmet does sometimes sux....

And (hopefully) the final update.
Got to pick up Peej today. And just beat the rainstorm! It was just the bulb. nmaD expensive bulb, once labor got added. But after I watched the vid on getting into the Fly's tail light, and very esp after the guy commented how easy it was to crack the part, it's still worth it to me. I just hope they put in a long-life bulb, like a LED or something that won't burn out for even longer than 10 more years.
And now I'm ready to scoot to work. Except sadly, Mon/Tues/Weds all have stuff right after. Esp Weds--I can't see how to haul a bass flute via scooter, along with regular and treble. The picc will fit almost anywhere including under the seat, ha! Fingers crossed that Thur is neither rainy nor too gusty nor excessively insanely hot. And Fri, too. I SO wanna scootie to work!

I too do NOT like the look of a trunk, but since I use "Minnie Mouse" mostly for errands, it's pretty much a necessity. I even added saddlebags for the extra groceries... Sorta completes the "family van" image... LOL! Incidentally, the matte-black trunks DO blend in with the seat, tires, fenders, etc. and don't look nearly as much like a refrigerator hanging off the back as the nicely match-painted ones... Still somewhat of an "eyesore" though. That's one of the things that appeals to me about choppers/bobbers... Bare bones. No bolt-on fruit salad. But... Ya can't carry anything but a skinny girl with you.Fifty years ago, THAT was enough... Today it's kitty litter and groceries! The missus won't let me decorate the passenger seat on the mouse with any skinny girls except my 62-year-old bikini-figured step-daughter... Dang... What amazing things lettuce and sit-ups can do... And she lives in Houston, so we don't see much of her! LOL!That new light should last years! Ride safe!Leo (pondering just where DO you put a tuba on a bike?) in Texas
