I recently installed a dr pulley variator and am wondering the minimum amount of shaft gear the outer plate needs to grip. Adding shims creates a lower gear, but I want to ensure that there’s enough of the shaft gear available for the variator to perform correctly. Right now it’s about 1/8-1/4”. Thx.

(Not sure if pic was uploaded) Without any shims, exposed gear part of shaft is just less than 1/4”. I suppose I could always grind down the spacer, but I’m not sure that would solve my problem. The reason why I am interested in adding shims is that this is a new variator, and I’ve noticed belt wear as well as slower accelleration. The original variator came loose while on the road and pieces were lost, so I have no comparision w/the new parts. (bike is a 2004 cf moto v3)

your nomenclature is not clear so restate what you mean or give pictures please
the drive shaft has a splined section just before the threads IF that is what you are talking about then you need to correct for the misalignment you are introducing between pulleys or suffer a loss of belt life and power delivery
the fixed pulley side on the front must be aligned with the fixed pulley side in the back

Interesting. I hadn’t thought of that. How do I test for mis-alignment?

the belt should be parallel with both pulley faces if you hold a good straight board against the veriator fan you can measure the distance from the belt at the front and then at the rear

Yes, it seems the outer pulley was not straight. I re-installed and belt wear seems to have been halted. Thx.
