I think Gurney is the only driver to win a Formula 1 race in a car that he constructed himself. He is certainly one of the most influential American racers of the 20th century. Rest well and thank you for a job well done, Dan Gurney.

I read a little more about Gurney. He won races in the Formula One, Indy Car, NASCAR, Can-Am, and Trans-Am Series. Can you name another driver that has even qualified successfully for a race in all those series? -The Trans-Am series was my favorite. Camaros, Mustangs, Challengers, Cudas, AMC Javelins. Those cars made it more interesting than Nascar, IMHO.

AJ Foyt and Mario Andretti also won in multiple racing formats but these guys were a different breed, Foyt also won the 24 hours of Le mons while having to drive 18 hours when Gurney forgot to wake up.

Ya Gotta Roll with Super Tex on this one. Know body really come even close to AJ. 1965 Milwaukee mile. The primary new rear engine car and crew did not show up so in true Super Tex fashion AJ prepped the front engine roadster himself and put the car on the pole. led the first 16 laps and finished 2nd of a 200 miler...

Ive worked with many and have been star struck by none but AJ is a different breed all together, the OG intimidator. Had some association with AJ's Power Team and this pic is fresh from Kenny's Indy 500 win, having some fun time in the Garage as Kenny gets his Power Team Guitar. That Larry Foyt over my right shoulder. A visit to the race shop outside of Houston I was called for a one on one with AJ in his office and you better have your snit together when you speak to that man or your out. there was a ora of light around him that made it difficult to look him in the eye.

I did get to see AJ Foyt race at Daytona in a stock car. He was running a close second to Bill Elliott in the closing laps but ran out of fuel just before the white flag. I never saw Gurney race in person.
