Hi Guys. I have a Sunny 150 gy6. It's my daily ride to work in Lake Havasu. Love the little thing. So I bought some new Perelli SL26 tires and some performance parts from Scrappydog. The tires came and my buddy changed them out for me. So tonight I started to do some mods.
Cleaned up all the road grime and then took the stock air box off. I bought a foam filter and a 115 jet from scrappydog. The filter has a steel ring around the base as part of the way it mounts/is built. So I changed the jet first. Super easy. Then put the carb back on and try to fit the filter that "should" fit my brand just fine. But the dumb crossmember is so narrow. The filter will fit BUT, I cannot use the outer foam "pre filter" and the main foam touches the crossmember.
So I wanted to get some options. I have to still spray it with foam oil. It has a little spring inside. Will it hurt to be pressed on the crossmember? It was 10$ so I am thinking of just going with it for now and then later get another and fab a better intake tube.
So with the filter and 115 jet, I also plan to do some exhaust. My plan is to keep the stock pipe and muffler. But I am going to gut it. Cutting the end cap off, then gutting it and putting a bigger exhaust tip on. That way I don't have to buy something that probably wont fit. My scoot has 2 shocks also.. AND I also am thinking the gutted can will still keep a bit of back pressure.
I really just want it to still be reliable because I like to take it to work and out with buddies on the weekend with other scooters in town.
Thoughts scooter lovers?

Forgort to mention I also bought a new CDI and some 12g rollers to experiment with. Once the intake and exhaust is all finished and I can see what power that made, then ill do the rollers and see what difference that makes also.

I did some similar mods to my old 150. I also had sl26's and really enjoyed the difference in handling.
There are several ways to do the intake tube, some have been posted recently. I think positioning the end of the intake to the side of the bike, to collect cooler air, is a good idea. I used a piece of flexible steel tube from an exhaust repair kit for that. I think 115 on the main jet is a good start and might be just right for the area you are riding in.
I think your exhaust idea will work but I went with a new exhaust and I did not really experience back pressure issues. If you are going to the trouble of boosting performance, why not add the extra wow factor of a cool-looking, performance exhaust? Are you aiming for more of a "sleeper" look?

I don't think back pressure is very important, at all, in a four stroke. If you can afford it, just get a performance exhaust. If the outer, pre filter won't fit, it won't fit. Here is a link for one with a ' elbow on it: www.ebay.com/itm/42mm-Performance-Air-Filter-GY6-150CC-250CC-ATV-Go-Kart-Pit-Dirt-Bike-Scooter-/262316080408?hash=item3d1341bd18:g:46EAAOSwoBtW1smn&vxp=mtrAs for the exhaust, you can gut yours, and that will probably be fine. You can get some nice, performance exhaust, that look really good, for a good price. Here is a link, or two, if you want to consider it. The performance gains from a CDI are minimal. Anyways, here are some exhausts to look at: These are from about $50, and up: www.ebay.com/itm/motorcycle-performance-exhaust-muffler-for-Scooter-GY6-150cc-Chinese-Scooters-/201840104904?hash=item2efe9b95c8:g:TZcAAOSw4CFYuOyv&vxp=mtr

I was kinda going for the sleeper look. And also not really wanting to spend more cash on the thing. =) Only got it in the first place because I work 2 miles away. Taking my Tahoe to work started to suck. But I didn't expect I would like riding it so much. I had Jettrim in town make me a badass seat cover already. 3 different leathers and pin striping stitched into the top. Ill have to do pics..
Thanks for the replies about the exhaust also. Being its my work ride and fun toy, I didn't want to start having to chase issues if I did something wrong. A buddy of mine has a gy6 converted Ruckus and it seems to have SO many little issues. Mine works more or less perfect so far. For a Chinese scooter.. =)
Tomorrow will be the start up after the motor mods. Ill ride it and then change the rollers out so I can see what difference they make.

Well not too happy so far...
Seems the 115 jet isn't big enough? Cuts out at full throttle. I read SO many pages of stuff and thought that would be the perfect size. I haven't messed with the diaphragm needle settings. Is that also something that I may need to do??
And the "gutting" of the muffler.... Stupid idea.. Spent 2 hours cutting that open and then cutting and re welding just to put it on and have it stupid loud sounding.. =( Like a chopper now. So looks like ill be getting an Ebay muffler after all..
I am kinda pissed that I didn't just put the new tires on and then change just the rollers and clutch springs and see if that would make me happy. But Nooooooo.... I had to drink the flavor aid and do mods.. =)

Your plug insulator should be a nice tan color. If it looks too dark, jet down. If the plug is lighter than tan, jet up. Running lean is bad for engine longevity.

Had a friend who is a motorcycle mechanic take a look at it. He said the plug looked good and he also watched the diaphragm open/lift up and said the fuel wasnt cutting out. But it keeps missing at high rpm. He thought maybe its getting too much vacuum from the open foam filter being right on the carb. Sugested I try the 115 jet again with the stock air box.
GD I am so mad I decided to mess with this... So even if the stock air box fixes it, I basically did the muffler and ordered all the parts for nothing. FML..

Decided to go to Lowes and get some pieces to make a longer air intake to see if making the carb have a bit more air restriction will help. Hope it fixes it a bit. But the exhaust noise now.... Damm...

Well I "think" the longer intake tube helped it a bit. I put the 115 jet back in and it runs better but still is lacking at full throttle. Charging the battery now since it went dead from cranking the fuel back int he carb over and over. And I put the 128 jet back in to see if that changes anything..
Did I mention how PISSED I am for even doing all this?? Now when I am forced to buy a new muffler, ill have to tune this all over again...

I was in your situation many times, try to make something better on my ex scooters and then mess it up, and spend more money to fix it back..Cheer up buddy

Problem is, aside from just wanting a new exhaust now due to the terrible sound, I don't know what direction to do the tune. Plug isn't clear enough to know what could be the issue. Part of my thinks I might have too much gas.. But the jets from factory were not labeled and the jet I got from scrappydog wasn't labeled but is a "115" jet.. After putting the home made air tube, it seemed to do a bit better with the 115. I put the 128 back in and revved it on the center stand and it started doing the cut out thing again.
Part of me wants to keep trying jets and the other part just wants to order an exhaust and see how that changes things.

The internet is full of so much different info about the same thing, its imposable to even get a good answer on something.
Last night I put the stock jet back in. And surprisingly it ran much better. I can tell its running lean because the plug finally changed colors enough that I could notice. And I could feel it lacking in the top end. SO many people said to do 115 right off the bat.. Other posts I have seen say you will need a 130 for sure.. So much crap to read and try to find the correct answer to..
I am going to get a new exhaust. I think mine now, gutted, sounds like total poop. After the new exhaust comes I'm going to start to maybe start with a 110 and see how it runs. Probably should just get a jet kit....

It's very difficult to improve the stock setup, and you'll save a lot of time and money just doing baby steps, as you're finding out. Slightly lighter rollers will improve acceleration slightly, but again, go slowly and gently with the mods. The accessory air filters never fit properly because of different frame dimensions. Changing the exhaust setup nearly always involves a lot of cutting and welding. No two scooter types have the same dimensions. Newer fuel injected Taiwanese scooters don't tolerate much modification since the FI computer is set up at the factory and can't be changed. The best way to do this stuff is to meet another rider who has done all the mods to an identical machine, and then you'll know what not to do!
