Hello all, as the title says that is my problem. On Feb 6th, I bought a black, 2007 Jonway Roadster from a friend and spent $400 bucks for a scooter shop to get it running like crap, (I suspect the carburetor needs a good cleaning).
Then while looking for various parts for the Jonway, I came across a 2004 Honda Reflex for sale that I thought would make a perfect parts bike. But when I went to check it out it only had 3860 miles on it, was in great shape panel wise, and the only reason it was not being ridden was because it developed a carburetor problem 8 months earlier they decided to park it.
If I were to buy it there was a spare carburetor as part of the deal. Well, on Mar 4th, I did buy it and when I got it home, I put in a new battery, sparkplug, and fuel filter. When I tried starting it, it would only crank and not even attempt to start.
After doing my basic diagnostics I decided that it needed a new fuel pump so I bought one, WRONG, still only cranked. Frustrated, I decided to see if I could rebuild the spare carburetor that came with the Honda. So I found a video on youtube and went to work. I took it completely apart cleaned everything and got it back together.
Next I removed the carburetor on the Honda and put on my rebuilt one. I also put the original fuel pump back on as an afterthought. Gave it power and would you believe, the darn thing cranked and came on. I later found out that the original carburetor had a bad Starting Enrichment, (SE) valve. I found this out by searching the web for my problem, and it matched exactly.
The good news, I have 2 running scooters, a Red 2004 Honda Reflex, with 3860 miles and a black 2007 Jonway Roadster, with 558 miles. Once I get a chance I'll rebuild the carburetor on the Jonway and see which one runs best and keep it, the other will go on the Lemon lot for sale.
The bad news, the Honda has trouble and can only get up to roughly 5000 rpm's then it will start to struggle and the rpm's will drop a few hundred or more.
My questions, is there some adjustment I can make, do I simply need to ride it and "blow out" the cobwebs, or, is there something else wrong? From watching videos and other peoples posts I know the Honda is a beast. But I really don't want to take it to the repair shop for something that I feel is an easy fix just so they can take another few hundred dollars from me, especially since I've come this far with it.
Thanks.

[/quote] i have 3 guesses off the top of my head: 1. the CDI might be the problem 2. you are reaching the limits of fuel delivery, lines too small, bad filter, bad pump, etc. 3. weak valve springs. there could also be a binding problem somewhere, but i believe this would result in excessive heat.

Looks like a fuel delivery issue, could be valve lash related as well. Check your fuel pump and adjust valves.

I think you guys are right as I suspected the fuel pump may be on the way out. I noticed when I had the old carb on that the fuel wasn't really moving in the glass filter like it did when I put the rebuilt carb on. I really like the look of the Reflex, plus it has a stereo, and my helmet fits under the seat no problem.
I'll more than likely put it in the shop and have them check the pump and CDI. I don't want to simply buy parts like I did with the fuel pump, (it was very poor quality). A couple of hundred dollars spent one time is way better than me buying used electronic parts with no clue if that's the problem. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'll keep you posted as to what I find out.

I don't have a clue as to why but I'll take it. I started the Honda up this afternoon and revved it, and I got it to go to 8500 rpms with no problem. I even could give it gas as it idled down to 3500 - 6000 rpms and it wouldn't stall out like it did the day before. Mind you I haven't actually ridden it yet, its still on the center stand and I still have to put the seat and body panels on it. But that's coming real soon.

glad to hear it's running.
remember, check your oil and lights before every ride, wear your gear, and be alert.

You might just want to run some Seafoam through the fuel system first. As for fuel pumps I'd go with Mikuni.

I'm finding that getting parts for these bikes is definitely a challenge. I had so much fun cleaning and rebuilding the spare carb on the Honda that I'm going to rebuild my OE one that was trashed. I called BikeBandit.com and ordered 2 sets of screws, a new SE valve, new throttle wire screw, and a float bowl gasket just so I can rebuild my broke carb and have a like new replacement, in a bag on standby. I'm hoping that the fuel sending unit on the Jonway matches the one on the Honda, that way it will be an easy fix for the Jonway.

I'm finding that getting parts for these bikes is definitely a challenge. getting parts for the jonway shouldn't be that hard. scrappydog scooter parts, and parts for scooters are both big time suppliers of chinese parts, and both have been in business for at least the past 9 years. the reflex will be the one that gives you fits because you will need to find a honda parts dealer. although i haven't dealt with bikebandit, i've heard the name off and on, and i've heard nothing bad about them.

While trolling the web getting knowledge on these bikes I came across their site more than a few times. I called the shop that did the work on the Jonway and they said they get their parts from them. I checked them out and decided to give them a call. I'll definitely look into the 2 sites you mentioned for parts I suspect I'll need a different type of sending unit for the Jonway. I'm in the process of taking the panels off of it so I can get to the carburetor and the back of the gas tank. I wish now that I hadn't filled them both up with gas as I have to remove the sending unit and I don't have a siphon.
