My name is Tari and even though I shouldn't be so excited, I really am! I'm planning to get another scooter next week (or weekend at the latest). I had a Roketa 49cc in 2008 and rode it every where in my little town. So much has changed since then but the one thing that has stuck with me is that I miss my scooter! So...instead of my complaining another year, I am just going to do the deed and buy one. I'm still deciding on which one I want to get, but I do know that where I'm living now a 49cc will not have the power I'm needing. I also want to go on actual rides that involve more than scooting around town. I think a 150-200cc will fit my needs (as well as budget).
Even though I have had a scooter before, I still consider myself a "newbie". I am planning to take a safety course that will give me the motorcycle endorsement when I have completed it after I go and take the written test for my permit on Tuesday. I've also been looking into bluetooth helmets because even though my state does not require helmets, an accident is always possible.
As a mother of 4 almost all grown kidlets, who will all want to ride the scooter, I have already given myself permission to tell them that this is MY big-girl reward. It's going to be my R&R and be economical in the process!
I asked my wife last night if she knew why I wanted one so badly and her response was to ask me a question, "What did you enjoy about having your first one?" I got a sappy smile on my face when I replied, "I loved the feeling of freedom when I rode it. I rode it everywhere and always had a smile on my face." She said, "You answered your own question. You have always shared everything with the kids. This is YOUR thing. So go do it!" So...I made up my mind that I will allow myself to get this one thing that I have been wanting for years...and I'm going to get to choose what I want instead of what is offered. And, I have to be honest...I'm really excited!

150-200cc will fit my needs Include Sym/Lance in your research (if available in your area).
Consider a modular or full-face helmet to reduce the odds of this.
Remind yourself that you are invisible to other drivers . . and observe how few have both hands on the steering wheel.
As you have already inferred . . NEVER let anyone else ride your scooter, unless the potential scooter damage and injury liability is acceptable.

Welcome to the forum. Kudos to you for taking the MSF course. That course will help you avoid accidents. A 125-150cc scoot will normally have a top speed between 50 and 55 mph, so you can safely travel more roads than you could with that hard working 50cc scoot.

I have a question...
I found a Sym HD 200 for a decent price. It has 3800 miles and is a 2007. It has been used very lightly. I'm planning on test driving it tomorrow. My question is this...what should I expect for life-span with regular maintenance?

Lifespan = pretty darn good! SYM scooters (the one you are looking at will have been made in Taiwan) have a great reputation for reliability. However, parts availablility may be an issue, when/if you ever need any. I strongly advise you to find out if you have a SYM dealer close to you. If so, hooray - and call them to see what they would advise you regarding the year of the bike, any parts concerns, and specific things you should look for when test riding/evaluating it. If you don't have a local SYM dealer, call the nearest one anyway, and ask the same questions. In fact, if you'd like, you could call Tropical Scooters in Vero Beach, FL - they sell Kymco, Lance, and SYM, and the lady who owns it with her husband (and usually answers the phone) is very nice, and would be happy to answer your questions! 772-778-4779 - open Tuesday-Saturday... Here are a couple links to the 2007 (ish) SYM HD 200: www.justgottascoot.com/symhd200.htmwww.motorcyclistonline.com/2008-sym-hd-200And, the SYM website - www.alliancepowersports.com/models/In fact, I've been thinking about how to buy this: treasure.craigslist.org/mcy/5960084671.htmlA 2006 SYM RV250... If you are thinking used, also look for Aprilia/Piaggios, Honda PCX 150's, Yamaha SMax's, and Genuine's - I did not mention Genuine with Lance and Sym and Kymco, because their prices tend to be higher new, but look for any of the above used...

Thank you everyone for the feedback. I had been planning on buying new, but when I came across the HD200 for $800 with as little mileage as it has, I had to check it out. I am really excited for this one because it has the reputation of being a reliable scoot as well as a lot of fun. I'll be driving a couple of hours to test drive it and then bring it home. Tomorrow is going to be a big day (and long one) but hopefully a rewarding one!
