Another thing to watch for is the vacuum line. I have gone through all these exact problems and the shop was trying to clean and/or replace my carb to get it to run right. As I am pretty poor too, I declined the work and continued to ride it as it was. It then broke down a good 20 miles from home so I trued fooling with it on the road and found the vacuum line had cracked halfway through so it looked like it was on there and fine but the back side of it that you couldn't plainly see was broken. Cut off the broken part, re-attached it to the valve, started right up and ran perfectly fine. Such a simple problem can completely screw up the whole motor...
Just something to keep in mind for the future...
