I found the problem! It was a crack in the exhaust heat shield. I took apart the cvt and ran the engine without the variator, belt and clutch. The bike still made the noise, i then tracked the noise to the cracked heat shield... I removed the shield and the noise is gone!
rocky- the bike is a daily driver, it has close to 5000 miles. The valve clearance is good, the noise is the chatter from the sliders.
Thanks to everyone for the help!

I haven't had the time to take it apart yet...I previously inspected the sliders and everything looked normal.
Will it damage anything if I run the motor with the variator and belt off I might be able to determine if it is the clutch, belt, or variator that way...

I put 12g Dr. pulley sliders in when I got it new. How often should the slider weights be replaced?
I just don't want something to fail in the cvt... I'm trying to figure out the issue before it breaks something. I am familiar with the normal chatter from the sliders, but this is louder than usual.
should I be looking for anything other than broken springs in the clutch? Does anything need to be greased/ oiled in the clutch?

Gear oil is next on my list to change, I checked it on level ground and the fill hole still over-flowed oil when I opened it up. Oil is changed every 500 miles. I just changed oil this weekend and I did not see any metal shavings in it. I have not checked the valves lately, but they sound much louder if the gap is too large. This noise seems to happen when I am accelerating quickly or decelerating quickly, and it sounds like it is coming from cvt. when the cover is on and I am riding I hear it, and when I remove the cover it is louder...
I will take apart the clutch when I have time to inspect it... This noise has been gradually becoming more noticeable.

Edit- solved the really loud noise... But I can still hear a noise that seems to be coming from the variator area. I have replaced variator and belt, so that rules out that possibility. What happen if a crankshaft bearing is going bad? Any suggestions were to look next? The noise sounds like rattle when it is idling and gets louder when under load. I thought it was slider chatter, but I have ruled that out with new weights and variator.
Hello everyone at the new forum! I have noticed that I have a new noise that is some type of rattle or belt slapping noise coming from the cvt. I have switched the belt to an old one as a test... And the belt seems like it is ok compared to the old one. I have cleaned and inspected the variator and weights. The only thing I have not touched is the clutch. My scoot has almost 5,000 miles on it, it is a tank tr16 150cc with 16" wheels. The noise happens when i accelerate quickly, and sometimes when I let off of the throttle. What does it sound like to you?
