I was able to get it up and running just by cleaning the carb. I stripped it and soaked the jets and other little parts, and that did the trick. I tooled around the neighborhood a bit and enjoyed myself thoroughly. Now to dodge the mod-bug...

You know, I was wondering if it was something like that, since I found an old spider egg sac on the side of the carburetor. However, the carb cleaning did the trick. I just drove it around the neighborhood a bit, and all is well. I was concerned about the dash lighting, which wasn't coming on completely, but once the engine started proper, it was fine. I adjusted the idle to ~1800, as it was up at 2200 (oops). Also, the fuel gauge was showing empty even though it was full, but it righted itself after a couple miles. I think I just doubled what was on the odometer. Thanks, fellas! Also, thanks to all those that helped other folks to help me get to this point, and to Big Guy for his video on breaking down the carb. The only thing I need now is to bleed the brakes. They were a little squishy, and not quite as effective as I would like. Then I have to fight off the mod bug!

Wow, that was a fast response. Those are excellent images, thank you very much! I didn't even see the little ones.
In short, all holes are completely clear. Carb cleaner shoots out at all the right spots, daylight is visible through all holes in the jets.
YES - Did you take the PILOT JET out and made sure you can see daylight through it. YES - Did you verify that Spray spragyed out of the tiny holes by the butterfly when cleaning out the PILOT JET. DONE (it was 2 1/2 turns out already): Fuel Ratio Mixture screw clockwise until it stops and turn it out 2 1/2 turns
I'm going to put it all back together (hopefully correctly ;D) and see if this has made any difference.

Hello all. I'm just getting into riding, was given a couple 2008 Jonway YY150T-12 scooters by the in-laws. They've been sitting pretty much the entire time, only 5 miles on each. Since they've been sitting so long, I was bound to have trouble... I'm just going to get one working for now, and probably use the other for parts, as my wife has no interest in riding scooters. I replaced the battery, checked the oil (still clear gold), and ... can't get it to start (I tried them both, but am sticking with the one because the other apparently has a fuel leak). So I've come here to get advice while I'm cleaning out the carb (thanks to the info on the old site). BLUF: 1. 2008 Jonway YY150T-12 2. 5 miles on it 3. Been sitting for years, gift from in-laws 4. Will catch, run for up to 5 seconds, then die. 5. Covering the air intake port with my hands helps it run longer, meaning less air = longer running. 6. New battery, new spark plug (that sparks). 7. Carb had plenty of fuel in the bowl 8. Carb is currently being cleaned, just in case, but looks pristine.
First, thanks to all who read this and offer advice/info. I've read several threads on the old board, and from the carb cleaning 101 thread found my way here.
I'm just getting into riding, was given a couple 2008 Jonway YY150T-12 scooters by the in-laws. They've been sitting pretty much the entire time, only 5 miles on each.
Since they've been sitting so long, I was bound to have trouble... I'm just going to get one working for now, and probably use the other for parts, as my wife has no interest in riding scooters.
I replaced the battery, put in a new spark plug, checked the oil (still clear gold), and ... can't get it to start (I tried them both, but am sticking with the first one because the other apparently has a fuel leak). It's at the point where it'll catch, run for up to 5 seconds (usually 1 or 2 seconds), then quit. I'm not sure if it's running smoothly or not, but it doesn't really sound all that smooth.
I've tried modulating the throttle, adjusting the idle screw (both ways, as it seems to get up to about 1200rpm max before dying), took off the airbox and hose to the carb, and no difference. So I put my hand in front of the air intake opening on the carb and by almost completely blocking it I have been able to get it to idle for a bit longer, up to maybe 20 seconds before it dies, which tells me something is causing the air/fuel mix to be off. The whole time I'm slowly opening my the gaps in my fingers to let more air in to try to see if it'll keep running, but I just don't know how to maintain it.
So, I know the spark plug is good, watched it spark against the engine. I've now taken off the carb for a good cleaning (just in case, though it looks absolutely pristine) and am doing that now. No build up, no apparent clogging of holes, however the vent hose was cracked, but everything else looks peachy. There was plenty of fuel in the bowl, so I know the fuel is flowing, the question is why it won't continue to run and warm up.
Some things I'm considering are issues because of my reading online: 1. Ignition coil - though why it would be bad after only 5 miles, even though it sat for 4+ years 2. Potential loss of vacuum somewhere, likely due to old hoses 3. valves, though this seems highly unlikely considering how little it has been used.
So, ideas, please?
