I have now resolved this problem with a bit of free expert advice. It wasn't actually an electrical problem like i had assumed. The problem was a ceased drive sprocket which was rather easy to free and hopefully the little bit of spray grease i have used will stop this from happening again.

I have had the side casing off and when the starter motor is clicking it is actually turning rather slightly. Next step is too trace wires back from starter/solenoid. Thanks for ya help peoples.

Yes the battery has just been charged and i think i tried to jump the solenoid correctly. . . i put a long screwdriver across the terminals and it sparked so i assumed it was charged and earthed but i may be wrong ? i also checked that the starter motor was earthed by running a wire from the battery earth direct to the starter motor body ?

I have had it for 9 months. i have changed the starter motor thinking it was that, but the saying does go . . . leave it too the pros.
