Update:
Scooter is beat to body wise. After a while of thinking about it Ive decided to pull the motor and put it on my Xtreme 50cc. the Xtreme is in slightly better shape, but has a longer frame and better brakes/tires/seat/bigger tank/and suspension. The front tire on the taotao slowly loses air so this alone will be an improvement. The Xtreme is a bit thinner body style, but its taller. I'm curious how much thats gonna affect mph.
The motor that is currently on the Xtreme will go onto the Taotao to be rebuilt and fixed up so I can have a friend ride with me. (riding alone is kinda boring)
===
Yesterday I took my little sister on the back of the taotao to go see a friend. We looked stupid as crammed on this little scoot in full riding gear (I dont ride w.o. at least a helmet and usually with gloves and jacket)
The scoot performed pretty well. Adverage speed was 30. Once we would get up to 35 it would suddenly maintain it or go up to 40. I'm thinking the variator weights are sticking. sometimes I will get going, it will get to 20 and just stick or slowly lose momentum. If I pull over, restart the scooter and take off it will easily get up to 35 again. Really weird. I'll be ordering a new performance variator in 30 days when I get some extra cash. Might also upgrade the stator.
As far as the variator goes what should I be looking for? I think I wanna go ahead and look for a slider setup. Are there any brands to absolutely avoid? or some that are great? Looking to keep it kinda cheap.
How much resistance should an exhaust have? Im thinking about welding up a new simple muffler to make the scooter louder so people hear me on these country roads. I want to put a flap on the tip that I can shut when in city limits to quiet it back down. I have a no resistance air filter, so I was thinking a non restricted exhaust would run ok? ----
Sorry for the wall of text.

Mkay I looked at ebay histroy and the weights are actually 5.5
I swapped the carb for a more adjustable one off a different scoot.
After some tinkering she runs a solid 30-33 on flat.
But once I get going 35 it maintains it for a long time.
Went down a really steep hill and got going 50. Was scary as , this scoot is just not made to go that fast. I need fresh brakes and a tighter suspension before I do that.
My only problem is it has a bit of trouble on the very steep hills. Its been at a friends for all of this and I rode it home and back today and found that for the steep steep hills I had to kick my way up.
I'm thinking I can fix this by swapping for some slider weights.
I have some of the small clutch springs, but not the big one. The small ones are blue if that makes a difference. What spring should I go for?
Im happy with 30-35 but need a little help getting it over the hills.
Now onto body work.
The body is cracked and ruined. I was thinking about ripping it all off and just welding a bracket for the lights. Mine is one of the ones with the huge flat front, will removing this help with speed?
I would think that itd help with aero, but maybe it helps to hide behind it?
I also put a big 35w fog light in a 3x5 off roading light and mounted it where there should have been a headlight. I lost the old headlight :/ Its super bright, but I need to figure out a low beam for when traffic is coming. I have another of the same light so I might mount it below and point it down.
I havent regaped it yet, but its on the list.
Thanks for all the help getting me up and going! ;o ;o ;o ;o ;o ;o ;o ;o

Mkay I cleaned the jets and found the screw for the drain and no change. Maybe I didnt cut my cdi enough. Is there a wire I can disconnect vs cutting into the cdi?
I have a carburator for a 150cc scoot. Think thatd give me any benefit?

There is also a hose that runs from the bottom of the carburetor. It used to have an adjustable screw in it, but it feel out. What is its purpose?
Thanks for all the help in advance!

Hey Guys,
Ive got a 50cc TaoTao Scoot.
It runs pretty good once I let it idle for about 8 to 10 min and it warmes up.
Mods so far: Cool air intake cone
Derestricted Exhaust. Last owner removed the washer and poped holes in it
New variator weights I think they are 7.5 I bought them forever ago and just now put them on
Last owner removed Variator washer
Upgraded headlight to a halogen 35w fog light that fits in an aftermarket 3x6 headlight assembly
Cut CDI so rev limiter should be gone
---
heres my problem:
Scoot runs fine when I get going. I can go from shut off to 31mph. Then it starts to bog down till it hits 20 mph then I can slowly get it to 23 and it wont go past that.
Im guessing theres a rev limiter I'm not finding. Anyone know?
Thanks!
