I do understand your gripe... When I went from big bikes to scooters 8 years ago, I started with a Chinese Xingyue 150, and was thrilled at how CHEAP the parts (stock, OR upgrades) were... I mean, we're talking prices reminiscent of my youth 50 years ago... I had a ball with that old 150, but finally had to go larger to safely keep up with traffic.
Now, I'm riding a WELL-USED Kymco Grandvista (roughly equivalent to your Honda 250). And yes, the 250 parts ARE from a different planet than the 150 parts.
However, depending on what you need, you can still find bargains on eBay, or other on-line sites. Fortunately, the 250's (even Chinese) seem to be built to a whole different (as in BETTER and longer-lasting) standard than the 150's. They need fewer parts replacement, or upgrading.
Before I'd spend hundreds of dollars (which I don't have... LOL!) on an exhaust setup, or something similar, I'd make one up from tubing and auto or stationary-engine muffler. These old 250's are not exactly high-end collectibles, and I have no worries about detracting value with some home-made repairs. Just me...
Compared to Chinese 150 parts, 250 parts are much more expensive, but diligent searching and some creativity will still keep you on the road... And how sweet it is to run right up to 65+ which is not realistic on smaller-displacement scoots!
