I just received my Prima Magnetic Oil Drain Kit. The magnet is supposed to just slide into place in the plug's recess, right? It seems the magnet is just slightly larger than the diameter of the plug. What gives?

It should just be a bolt with a magnet on the tip ---An Oil "drain plug" replacement bolt--- The Kit should have a few bolts with a magnet on the tips ---A replacement of factory bolts to catch any metal flakes... 1 bolt out replaced with 1 bolt in.
YES, The magnet should just stick to the recessed area in the big round "plug"
Got pics? I only ask because it maybe a defect. A magnet floating around inside may not be a good idea........

Either you received an over sized magnet, or your drain plug is other than standard size. The magnet should fall right in place (it won't stick...the plug is aluminium). Then you will have to modify the shape of the oil screen, so it doesn't get crushed as you tighten the plug. Just gently push up on the bottom of the screen, to shorten it's length.

Thanks for the pics!!!!!!!
IMHO, that magnet is indeed a bit too large for the use as stated by the manufacturer .......
Seems a replacement is in order as the mag should fit inside the threaded area, not float on the top of the threaded area...
Good Luck

May I ask what the supplier had to say via e-mail? Just my own idle curiosity.
I wish you well collector but, in the long run this maybe an issue not worth fighting for......
I expect you paid around 20$ with shipping so just use the replacement bolts and use this as a back up plug---
Then again, you should get what you ordered.......

I had one of those kits (for a 50cc) about 5 years ago but I can't remember if I have it still or how the magnet sat in mine.

From the picture you posted, it looks as though your oil filter cap/plug, has a thicker wall (between the threads and the hole the magnet should fit in) than most. I have a spare cap/plug that I will look at tomorrow, and get a measurement of the hole's diameter. That way you will have some idea of which part is not right.
Just changed my oil today.....wish I had thought about your problem, and taken some pics.....I have the same name brand kit as yours, installed mine in Apr 2012 when scoot had just 99.8 miles on the clock.

What is the point of the magnet in this kit that fits where the drain is? To catch metal shavings? Isn't that just a workaround to solving a more serious issue, or is there some sort of other benefit I am not understanding?

Well, I took a measurement of my spare plug.....ya can't make out the reading in the photo, but it's .925 inches. My magnet is hard at work in the scooter, so I can't give you it's diameter....but it must be around 7/8" (.875"), maybe a bit less, for it will fall in and out of the plug with no resistance at all.

Here is a video I found on the Prima Magnetic Drain Plugs, and unless they manufacture them differently it shows how it should be:

On a side note, there is nothing stopping any of us (besides maybe lack of tools or health) from buying a magnet and doing it ourselves. I saw this vid a few weeks or so ago, and it's by 90GTVERT using the side drain bolt.

Onewheeldrives first video shows how it SHOULD fit----- (Thank You good Sir) Compared to the picture provided by Mr. Collector, there is an obvious flaw---- May I repeat my last question??? What did the Dealer you purchased from have to say Via E-mail? No need to mention the parts dealer but, I am curious to see what they say after this information has been provided...... The Filter may be removed in some folks opinion..... To answer Mr. Iain, Yes, it is to catch any metal flakes that the cheapo metal filter may not get during breakin or regular use. If you see Metal in your oil after the initial break in, Things may have gone really bad.......... Good Luck!!!!!!
