The Scion is rated for a 1,000 pound trailer. The Smart is rated for 2,000 pounds.

You should take this contest seriously. They may be the only two gas powered cars available in the States in a few years

I was with my Mom, first car at a stoplight, and there was a Smart car first on its side. I asked her if she would've rather I bought one of those instead of my scooter. She watched it go by, then said she would feel better if I'd gotten it, but it sure is a lot uglier than my scooter. First bit of any praise she's given "that thing" as she usually calls Peej. >'Kat

Btb, just why IS it called a Smart car? I thought when I first heard about them that it would have some fabulous gas mileage (hence, "smart"). But it really doesn't get any better than my Focus. It barely makes highway passing speeds, it's shorter by almost half than my old Taurus wagon, it's uglier than...well, than a Scion.
What's so smart about it?
>'Kat, wondering what its speed plummets to if it's hauling 2000 lbs of anything....

Ah... I like the Scion appearance a little more than the Smart Car, so it gets my vote. As for "macho" the only macho Smart Cars I've seen were in Europe, re-powered by Suzuki Hyabusa crotch-rocket engines... No reverse-gear, but they definitely do GO!
I've seen a few Smart Cars AFTER being involved in medium-speed collisions... NOT pretty. Can you say: "flattened sardine-can" filled with pureed people?" I thought you could... LOL!
I remember just before their introduction when the "smart" features were SUPPOSED to be "under $7,000 price" "over 50 mpg" etc. Essentially, a re-birth of the Beetle.
NOT!
Once they hit the road, as mentioned, it seems they do NOT give substantially better gas mileage than MUCH more practical cars, and they are EXPENSIVE!!! As far as I can see, they have ONE and ONLY one redeeming feature: They are CUTE! And they really ARE cute... Cute enough to keep them selling. And in America, THAT is enough.
After giving the Scion IQ a good squint, I believe a good hot-rodder COULD make a pretty macho-looking ride from one... Wide, WIDE wheels and tires, slammed in the weeds stance, maybe a BIG V8 motor with the front axle stuck out front of the tinwork, suicide style... Even left with stock engine, still cool, sort of like a "nekkid" skelly "chopperuckus" 150... Not the FASTEST ride around maybe, but STILL definitely MACHO!
Yup, I like the IQ...

Thanks or turning me on to the hyabusa smart car. The one in this video is fast, agile, has excellent throttle/traction control and is very stable in a spin despite looking a little top heavy.
I like the rims and rear wraparound windows of the IQ, and the somewhat whimsical "futuristic" look of the Smart. I don't know anything about their drivetrains.

Scooter,
Yeah, hot rods have changed a lot from my days of flathead Ford roadsters... LOL! I believe a crotch-rocket engine in a Smart Car must be similar to the motorcycle-powered "Champ Cars" that resemble late 1930's stock-cars. Probably as fast as one would ever need... Now, just HOW do I make it BACK UP? Oh, right! A broom-handle out the window and push it like a "PEE-ROW" boat... And, now, where do I hook up the AC? LOL!
Neat video!

PS: Watch the vid, remember that's probably a 1,200-pound CAR, and then consider that 500 hp mutha Hyabusa mill in its normal 500-pound BIKE configuration... WHEW! No wonder they do 0-60 under 2-seconds, and top out WAY over 200 mph! THAT'S why they call 'em CROTCH-ROCKETS...
Now THAT is MACHO!!!
