www.scrappydogscooters.com/139QMB_50cc_Performance.htmlI was looking at scrappy's performance parts because I am planning a rebuild and bbk for a scoot I recently got. Look at the erlandson belt. Says "Yeah, Gates used to be made in the US, and Bando used to be made in Japan, but both are now made in China." I personally am all about MMG (modcycles) brand kevlar belt, they put up to so much abuse and they never rip even in horribly off balance variators.

I put a Gates belt on my scooter back in the summer of 2012. It has Made in China stamped on it.....that surprized me at time of purchase.
This winter I ordered a new one, since I had nearly 5,000 miles on the one mentioned above. The new one, (same Gates PL30705) was also stamped Made in China. So after removing the CVT cover, and the belt, and giving it a good look over, I decided the old belt was good for a while longer. Not one crack found in the valleys on the under side, absolutely no fraying, and it measured 1.12mm narrower than the new one. It will be 3 years old by the end of July, and have somewhere around 6,500 miles of run time.....maybe I change it then.
So as ricardoguitars said, as long as they are still reliable...it matters not where they are manufactured.

Where they are made doesn't matter, as long as Gates keeps a very close eye and no excuses properly run quality control program from the raw materials to the final product and their people always on site with authority to stop quality slippage.

Yeah, China is really taking over. I had to do some work on my old Honda car this month, and found that not only the parts from the auto-parts store, BUT factory Honda OEM parts like distributor caps, rotors, coils and such purchased direct from Honda (at double the price of auto-store goodies) were STILL made in China. Even the Japanese have caved in to the cheap production provided by a Communist nation with absolutely NO rules concerning what they do to the atmosphere. Add to that the fact that China IS capable of top-quality manufacturing, and WILL provide ANY level of quality you're willing to pay for (from absolute CRAP, to STATE OF THE ART) and you have an "irresistible" temptation to send your work to China, and send your employees to the unemployment line. And the answer is not to be found in a political party... A little less greed, and a little more care for our OWN country would fix most of the problem, and still leave PLENTY of market for China. Don't hold your breath... It's nearly impossible to always buy American anymore, so yeah, if the goods are decent, you just have to go with what's available. Only time will tell whether American industry can ever recover. We STILL make the world's best high-tech stuff, but I have to wonder how many components for even THAT are made in China... LO not so L...I wish this "global economy" could get together and work like a team so EVERYBODY could profit and have good jobs, but thousands of years of recorded history show THAT is not likely. On my last grocery run on "Minnie Mouse" I saw a bumper-sticker on a luxury SUV that summed it up well... It read: "I want it ALL, I want it NOW, and TOO MUCH is STILL NOT enough!" Yeah, nice attitude... Leo (buyin' AMERICAN when possible) in Texas
