(thought) i finally found the problem - need ideas to fix

Did you spray starting fluid around the carb and intake just to rule out any cracks or leaks?
IF there are any the motor will speed up when you spray it.
16,000km. i don't have starter fluid so i haven't done that yet. i did take the intake manifold off yesterday and put a layer of gasket maker to help seal any possible leaks. the intake manifold only has about 200 miles on it.
